Good finish to a very strong season of TV. Surprisingly low-key, underplaying even the grand reveals and some pretty seismic emotional moments, instead favoring a tone of bone-deep exhaustion that's very apt for a detective story but still a surprise for a superhero one.

Y'know, I've read this book, and I saw the Daniel Radcliffe one, and yet somehow I am always taken aback by just how dirty pool this story plays. It has all the appearance of reserved Gothic elegance, but at its core is screeching primordial terror clawing to get out.

Anyway! Sebastien Vanicek hasn't made his great horror movie yet, but it's coming. There's so much skill and style in INFESTED and EVIL DEAD BURN, that I just have to believe someone's going to hand him the right script someday and he's gonna take it to the got-dang moon.

It doesn't help this movie's case that this year saw the release of SEND HELP, which is just Sam Raimi putting on a clinic on how to do this sort of fare. And I had problems with that movie too! But for splattery rollercoasters rife with bad behavior, there's no one better.

...themes and imagery of domestic abuse detract from the fun. You'll be cheering some inventive bit of brutality or marveling at a particularly inspired bit of showoff camera work, and then the movie kicks you in the shin and reminds you to stop having fun. But fun was had, despite those efforts.

I remain of the opinion that there are no bad EVIL DEAD films. '13, RISE, and BURN are all worthy efforts at capturing the go-for-broke mania of especially the o.g. Raimi film. BURN's honestly the closest of the three to the first film's blend of earnestness and gonzo...ness.
