I thought this point Eric made about how libraries are early introductions to a social contract was really interesting, too:
“And what I think is so amazing about that is not only do you start to feel like you you are welcome in and belong in this place, the public library, but also you start to learn what it means to be part of a community. Because, let’s say you love Curious Georgebooks and you take out a Curious George book. You get the generosity of your society because it’s like “Here, take this Curious George book home, it’s free. Just bring it back and keep it in good shape. Don’t tear out the pages. Don’t write in it.” And you learn that you want to do that—not only because they tell you—but also because when you return it, you want to get the next Curious George book. And you realize that if the other kids in the community don’t return the book, or don’t take care of their books, you won’t be able to take it out. So, you learn mutual obligation and reciprocity from an early stage.”

The implicit media consensus is that urban voters should not be able to overrule rural voters, but that rural voters should be able to overrule urban voters, an assumption so axiomatic and unquestionable that nobody even understands they're making it.

I end my history of the Republican Party with a question: What comes after Trump? We are most likely looking at a prolonged, chaotic, and dirty struggle between different radical factions and different shades of extremism.

I realize now that it was probably a mistake to publish this piece on this SOTU/Epstein-dominated day… But if you can stomach it: I am “celebrating” the tenth anniversary of National Review’s “Against Trump” with a deep dive into the history and political identity of Modern Conservatism:

i think if you want to have those disgusting LED headlights on your car, you should have to do a test where they blast you point blank with your own headlights and then you have 15 seconds to successfully complete some sort of vision-based task, and if you can't do it they push your car off a cliff

THIS IS BIG For non-academics who might not understand why: 1. Sen. Warren is still a Harvard professor so this is a call coming from inside the house 2. As a tenured law prof, Warren knows it is a VERY big deal from a labor standpoint to call on Harvard to ignore tenure. The bar for this is HIGH.

It was a victim of its own success in a lot of ways. I was doing economic justice work pre-Occupy and the before/after was light and day. The previously-fringe discussion or wealth inequality became SO mainstream SO fast that folks kind of forgot it was new information to most in 2011.

"Klein’s musings about redrawing the line are, more importantly, a manifestation of a pervasive tendency in American elite circles to accommodate rather than fight back, to acquiesce rather than stand firm," says @thomaszimmer.bsky.social. Excellent piece. democracyamericana.com/posts/c5d024...

imo, if someone believes some races or ethnicities are genetically inferior to others, that person has revealed a weakness of mind and character that casts extreme if not irrefutable doubt on their other ideas. why would i expect them to use more rigor on, eg, housing than they do on human nature?

It’s crazy how Biden’s willful blindness to Israel’s genocide in Gaza completely wrecks his standing as an otherwise really good president. Looking down the list of his 4 years of accomplishments, even running up to his last days, Biden’s doing top ten stuff. But he just can’t say no to Israel.
