on Sophie Cunningham and a trans controversy that doesn't involve any actual trans people: defector.com/the-right-ha...
This rhetoric is ideal for listeners who believe trans women are an issue that they're supposed to care about, but don't actually have any real-world experience with them. The hypothetical trans girl who's supposedly causing all this trouble in the WNBA is the perfect tool for the conservative movement. She can't fight back, she can't disprove anyone's assumptions, and she can't garner sympathy when she's the target of hate. The perfect trans girl is the one who only exists in the imagination of the loudest cis people. Her monstrousness, the need to "protect young girls in a locker room" from her, gives them permission to enact policies that in reality only harm the anonymous girls, cis and trans, who want to play sports without the invasive scrutiny of gender-obsessed adults.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, as a child. Off panel, someone says to her, “Enjoy your youth!”
The second panel shows child Sarah again, now frowning. The person off panel continues, saying “After you’re 30 you’ll be old and your life will basically be over.”
Before the last two panels there is text that reads “LIFE AFTER I TURNED 30.”
The third panel shows adult Sarah opening a door.
The fourth panel shows the door opens to a beautiful field with flowers, a rainbow, and a pond. Sarah says “Wait what.”

i think these comment summarize it really well especially regarding the constant virtue signaling in how much they hate AI and implementing features to "own the bots" rather than features that are functionalities of any decent word processor + the insistence on vague communication
comment by user mayordea

"ok, so much ink has been spilled about emboss, from its problems to its misunderstandings. i think the intent behind it is fine, but it’s overall kind of strange and sort of pointless? at its worst, not counting potential witch hunts or suspicions that may arise from its existence, it’s deeply performative. for both the users who use it and how it reflects on ellipsus for implementing it before features that we actually wanted.

that’s kind of how i felt with ellipsus’s communication leading up to Plus. there have been many manifestos on anti-ai and so forth. i don’t think that’s bad either and i appreciate the write-ups on things like alternatives for google, but it got to a point where posting about ai was kind of all ellipsis was…… doing. i was checking social media pages for any feature updates or at least a concrete roadmap and just got more articles on ai. emboss feels like a culmination of all that, a feature that only serves to emphasize “AI IS BAD AND I DON’T USE IT” (and all the social effects that follow from such a declaration). girl, we’re already against ai, that’s why i’m sure we’re all here! how about features that actually help with writing and drafting?

again, the position to strongly oppose ai is not a bad one At All, but at some point i need ellipsus to forget about the ai boogeyman for one second and prioritize features that help writers rather than features that Own The Bots Epically.

i would love to pay for ellipsus plus since i want to support this platform, and the payment model is probably the most ethical i’ve ever seen it done (pay to own is pretty incredible!!), but right now its features on offer are not incredibly compelling besides writing analytics. people have stated already that custom themes should at least be a free feature with some limits for accessibility. overall, the priorities can be shifted around.

ellipsus needs to walk a very delicate line with how it approaches adding features, not paywa…comment by user anon

"Thank you for Part 2. The amount of heel digging says a lot already about your priorities lies with anti-AI activism over actual and genuine human creativity and human safety. And regarding roadmaps, many SaaS have roadmaps, including those that have a single developer. And completely human too considering this existed before AI even was a thing.

If I remain a user of Ellipsus I believe thanks to the vagueness of the features again I'll just treat this like any other tech company, or move. Not all software fits everyone and I respect that. Perhaps it is not for a significant number of people here. But putting your foot down on enforcing vague communication for the progress of your software when humans would like more information, even an estimate with communication on changes in the timeline? This is all just a very tech and dev bro thing to do, the very same thing every single one of us was avoiding. A lot of us work in the industry, we know these things are possible even with small teams, especially those with very good human user experience designers.

Thank you again for your time, that's a wrap on the feedback from me as I only get the same answers every time so I know there is not much else I can say."

I use Scrivener, not Ellipsus, but I really hope we're not moving towards some sort of writer surveillance to ensure authors aren't using AI. This feels like their intentions are good but it's poorly thought-out. Writers take breaks, pause to research or walk around. It's natural!!

In emboss’s case: 1) Who’s stopping someone accusing an ellipsus user and asking for their nonAI writing proof? The user might not have a + version, and then gets accused of AI usage? Then what? You will have failed to protect those users.

btw ellipsus' new "ai detection" tool, speaking frankly, is false advertising at best. there is no magical, easy way to "detect" gen ai. its a "tool" created to make people feel secure without offering actual security aka the most dangerous kind of "security" bc it breeds complacency.

Maybe this was unclear, but the word SHARE is the important thing here. Ellipsus wants people to use their site to let others read their work, and to use their custom themes to stylize it. Which is a nice idea! But they need to have a plan to protect their users if someone decides that work is icky.

I don’t agree that these metrics will be helpful—in fact I think you are shooting yourselves in the foot and this tool will be used for witch hunts because while technically it is opt-in, people will start demanding writers use emboss and anyone who opts out is guilty by default.

This is not what will happen. What will happen is that people will demand the use of Emboss for "proof" it cannot actually provide. People will start refusing to accept writing done in any other way. This is the exact opposite of productive or a reduction in anxiety.

People are already saying that they won't trust any author that doesn't use Ellipsus's "Emboss" feature, which feels bad to me, considering that it's only available for people purchasing Ellipsus plus. Like, you're going to assume an author is using AI because they can't afford a subscription?

Important 🧵 on Ellipsus’ new Emboss “feature” — I’m all for anti-AI, but I don’t think authors should give up their privacy. Folks who use AI need to be ignored, not demonized, because right now we’re just witch hunting each other instead of supporting talented creators. Build up, don’t tear down.

From their own marketing. WHO determines what's "natural pacing"? Here, that's 45 words per minute. Like I said, I was taught touch typing. I can do 150 wpm on a Good Spoons Day. Is that "natural"? Who determines what cadence is "NORMAL"? I'm sorry but this just seems like a tool made to be abused.
An image of the writing journey showing the “Story behind this work” in the Ellipsus reader. “Share the human process behind your work with writing metrics and human authorship badges.” An Emboss badge reads: "Support Human Writers." It shows a layover on the screen that says "the story behind this work" and shows Average Writing Speed being 45 words per minute and being labeled as "Natural Pacing." It shows 23 thinking pauses and a "median" interlacing latency (median delay between keystrokes)
