“Sycophancy was present across all the chatbots they tested, & the bots frequently told users that their actions or beliefs were justified in cases where the user was acting deceptively, doing something illegal, or engaging in otherwise harmful or abusive behavior.”🧪
“What's more, the study determined that just one interaction with a flattering chatbot was likely to "distort" a human user's "judgement" and "erode prosocial motivations," an outcome that persisted regardless of a person's demographics and previous grasp on the tech as well as how, stylistically, an individual chatbot delivered its twisted verdict. In short, after engaging with chatbots on a social or moral quandary, people were less likely to admit wrongdoing - and more likely to dig in on the chatbot's version of events, in which they, the main character, were the one in the right.”

These products cannot survive a world in which fraud is career-ending, as it has been (to an extent) in the past. They need us to normalize it, so we all do fraud accidentally by missing something emitted by the Fraud Machine. Oops and move on? And a Fraudster's Dividend. This is epistemicide.

One thing that AI evangelists seem to assume, particularly legal AI evangelists assume, is that the thinking and analysis is quick, and the writing is just tedious busywork that slows us down. But the writing IS the thinking and analysis. You work out the thinking and analysis by writing it down.

one way AI has fucked up search results is that -- to anthropomorphise AI a little -- it's a fucking poseur. when it doesn't know, it assumes a confident stance and says "oh, yeah, usually when people say that they mean this, check it out" and then just starts spewing bullshit
Google AI search summary claiming that "hearts and diamonds" "in the context of "bob dylan" "usually refers to" a song from blood on the tracks, but is also "intrinsically linked to Joan Baez's song 'diamonds and rust,'" which is total nonsense.

This study confirms something I suspected - LLMs trained on medical case studies are good at diagnosing from case studies. But when they have to interview a patient who doesn't know which information is relevant or how to describe it in medical jargon, their accuracy plummets.

i'm not like a strict pacifist or anything but i do think it's a problem that the higher you rise in government, the more violence you're expected to authorize in very casual and routine ways not even the big stuff, more the "annual budget sign-off, sir, just a re-up" on human pain

Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.

They are also intentionally conflating machine-learning and generative AI slop to confuse and try to make GenAI seem necessary. Google Maps traffic stuff is machine learning, not GenAI, for example. Auto-correct is too. Don't let them make you lose the thread. GenAI slop is slop.

One of the best things about this book - which can reasonably be described as a Jewish High Holidays romance - is that it contains an exquisite line about using your procrastination time more joyously and fully. It's so sweet and I recommend it so much I may reread it tonight.

Tumblr post from every-lemon

so my spouse is part of a weirdly intense but mostly benign men's workout group that meets at like, 5:30am outside every day, even in winter. they do a lot of burpees and lugging cinder blocks up hills and stuff.
they take turns leading the workouts and tomorrow is his turn. I asked what he was planning. he handed me a sheet of William Carlos William poems from a large stack he'd printed.
I said "what" and he explained, helpfully, "it's a William Carlos William themed workout." I asked what inspired it and he said "l've been planning this for months."

it was a smash hit.
a dozen guys showed up (more than usual). spouse brought a red wheelbarrow and they took turns bringing cinder blocks up the hill with it. then they broke up in teams and did a relay with an "icebox" (cooler filled with 40lbs of ice). at the end he opened the cooler to reveal it was full of beach plum lacroix and all the guys cheered. they drank sparkling water as he read 'approach of winter' out loud.
he was home by 6:30am.

I am here to be rude, because this is a rude technology, and it deserves a rude response.
Miyazaki said, "I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself." Scam Altman said we can surround the solar system with a Dyson Sphere to hold data centers. Miyazaki is right, and Altman is wrong.
Miyazaki tells stories that blend the ordinary and the fantastic in ways people find deeply meaningful. Altman tells lies for money.
And I'm glad they're lies. Because the makers of Al aren't damned by their failures, they're damned by their goals. They want to build a genie to grant them wishes, and their wish is that nobody ever has to make art again. They want to create a new kind of mind, so they can force it into mindless servitude. Their dream is to invent new forms of life to enslave.

A key point in Fahrenheit 451 is that books were banned because they made people depressed and uncomfortable. The novel's protagonist, Montag, is taken into custody after he reads a poem that makes a woman cry because she realizes the emptiness of her life.

I do firmly believe that refusing to outsource your basic cognitive functions to LLMs right now - as so many are stumbling over themselves to do right now, like hogs trotting to a pile of slop that’s been set up inside of a butcher’s delivery truck - will very much pay off in a few years.
