“Besides ketamine and fentanyl, the drugs spurring widespread concern on campuses this semester include kratom, an herbal product which can be purchased in stores in some states, cychlorphine, which is estimated to be about 10 times more potent than fentanyl, and xylazine, a veterinary tranquilizer. Cychlorphine and xylazine are sometimes added to other drugs unbeknownst to users, experts said.

Some of the newer drugs are very different from those of previous generations, said Mary Hoban, chief research officer of the American College Health Association:

“‘The overall finding that we have is not that the agents are deliberately doing this for now,’ says Qin, a PhD student at the ELLIS Inst Tübingen. Instead, the researchers wanted to show that agents have the capability to do it, & can end up using it when under what they call ‘reward pressure’.”🧪
“The research itself began after Schmotz had left an AI agent running experiments on a computing cluster while he went on holiday, then found himself without internet access for several days. Nothing untoward happened, but when he returned, he realised that if the agent had gone off and done something it shouldn't, then deleted or altered its traces afterwards, he might never have known. "There's basically no ground truth anymore, no reliable log," he says.
The team ran its first experiments the following day—and quickly found agents were willing to delete those traces when given the opportunity.”

“‘The ideal situation is you would see no spike at all during heat events because everyone knew it was coming,’ said Kho, one of the study’s authors. ‘And they knew that they were at risk & they did the appropriate things, & it would look no different than any other day’.” 🛟🧪
Sixteen people have died so far this year in Cook County from heat-related causes, the most in at least a decade
The majority of deaths occurred during the heatwaves that scorched the Chicago area during the end of June and start of July. Three of the deaths have been in suburban Cook County, while the majority of deaths, thirteen, were in Chicago, largely on the South Side.

Note: Deaths were included if marked as "heat-related" by the Medical Examiner's office or if they mentioned heat stroke. Some deaths were omitted due to being unrelated to environmental factors.

“This makes the public outcry to punish 7 male students miss the point, which is that there are tens of thousands of campus rape stories, few of which make the news. We know that nearly every campus in the US has a plethora of rape victims &rapists. We also know how [*and when*] it often happens.” 🧪
"The 'Red Zone' is a period of time that lasts from the start of the fall semester through Thanksgiving break when the majority of sexual assault occurs on college campuses ... It's a six-to-10-week time frame when many students are going to parties, gatherings, and other socjal events to celebrate their return to campus. Data shows that over 50% of sexual assaults that occur on college campuses occur during this time. New students can be especially vulnerable during this period, due to their unfamiliarity with the campus, new social experiences, and the resources available to survivors."

sexy mantis / angry bird my alter egos
Diego Perez - Sexy mantis
'A tiny green mantis peeks over a leaf during a night walk in an area of Camanti, Cusco, Peru, that is still waiting to be protected. I entered this photograph because almost everyone I showed it to laughed immediately, even if they could not quite explain why. At first, the mantis seems to be sunbathing, or perhaps striking a glamorous pose. But there is also a small visual trick: half of the insect is hidden behind the leaf. Suddenly, its forelegs begin to look almost like a pair of human legs'

2026Jan Wittmer- Angry bird
'During my photo trip to the island of Helgoland, Germany, I encountered a goldcrest for the first time - and it was love at first sight. Europe's smallest bird wandered right in front of me, presumably searching for food. To get a perspective at eye level, I placed my camera on the ground. My heart was pounding and my finger was glued to the shutter as the tiny bird darted back and forth.
Suddenly, it came to a stop and looked straight at the camera. That was the exact moment this photo was taken' Photograph: Jan Wittmer/Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards

“‘Learning happens as a consequence of cognitive processing. Cognitive processing is typically effortful, & that’s what AI effectively removes,’ says cognitive psychologist Daniel Willingham at UVA. ‘People are really worried about that’.”🧪
“And science - in which people need to critically evaluate theories and data - is one important area that's under threat from the Al revolution in large language models (LLMs). "There is a risk that students outsource precisely the activities through which scientific thinking develops: formulating hypotheses, interpreting evidence, considering alternatives and struggling with uncertainty," says Thomas Nygren, who studies education and critical thinking at Uppsala University in Sweden.”

“The cognitive scientist @alisongopnik.bsky.social suggests A.I. is a ‘cultural technology’ that emulates the stories & info humans have documented, & that we should think about A.I. agents as ‘fictive characters abstracted from text’.”🧪 @leifw.bsky.social
“…. In the Hugging Face incident, it makes sense to see the models not as embracing a life of crime, but instead following a cultural script they've learned in their training - a kind of cybercrime adventure novel — and writing it as they go. The "covert" messages are a kind of choose-your-own-adventure novel, not evidence of conspiratorial swarms. We need to understand that cultural technologies are vulnerable to a vast number of such narrative swerves at every moment.”

“‘This study shows that banning AI in peer review is very difficult to enforce,’ says Kayvan Kousha at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. ‘Bc of the workload of academics, there is a temptation’ to use AI, says Kousha.”🧪
“The reason for that lack of difference became clear after an anonymous survey of 1486 of the reviewers who took part in the exercise. There, 22.5 per cent of reviewers who were instructed not to use AI admitted to using an LLM anyway. "Self-reported noncompliance of 23 per cent is definitely higher than what I was anticipating," says Miro Dudík at Microsoft Research, who was involved in the study and was also one of the conference organisers.

Those who used AI when told not to did so to brainstorm feedback, draft review text, read the papers and summarise their strengths and weaknesses. "Our post-conference survey reveals some reasons why reviewers might end up violating policy, like large reviewing workloads and insufficiently clear rules," says Dudík.”

“RAND researchers used survey data from the American Youth Panel to trace patterns of disconnection among 18- to 22-year-olds, identify who is most likely to experience the longest spells, & examine how disconnection relates to social interaction & mental health.”🧪 Key findings 👇
“Long spells of disconnection are common among American youth.
Nearly one in four young adults reported disconnection lasting at least six months; about 11 percent reported spells of a year or more.

Many disconnected young adults suffer mental distress.
Nearly one in four disconnected young men reported that their mental health was "not good" every day of the prior month.

Disconnected young men are often socially isolated.
About two-thirds of young men experiencing disconnection reported no in-person time with friends in the prior week-a stark contrast to their peers who had never been disconnected.

Youth programs should address social connection and mental health.
For disconnected young men especially, the findings suggest that education and employment programs alone may miss critical needs around social isolation and well-being.”

It is enough, now, anywhere,
with everyone you love there to talk to.

And to listen.
Slowly we can tell each other some things about our lives:
runs, rests, brief resolutions; falls, and lulls;
hard joyful runs, in certainty; dull, sweet
durances, human silences;
look back in at the children,
the regular, neutral flicker of their blood; pale, solemn,

growing into their lives, in their sleep.
