In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the Toad NPCs have originally been envisioned to be highly nonstandard with odd cap shapes and unique colors. In each successive iteration of the game, their designs have been made to look more "normal" until the logical conclusion.

[Toads in prototype version have odd cap shapes, nonstandard colors and exaggerated faces. In the GBA version, the colors have been made more standard and the caps have been normalized. In the 3DS version the Toads are just recolors of the regular Toad design]
Note that Toad NPCs have been shuffled around between versions so there is not always a 1:1 correspondence between which Toads use which designs.
