Maybe at least make JdeBP a mod? I logged in for the first time in weeks today to find many reports from him. I just rubber-stamp suspended all the accounts he reported.

He might. I would not, thanks all the same. I think if you can't any more — no shade; it's a lot — it might be better to just announce that, let everybody migrate, and do a graceful shutdown.

We lost Douglas Adams 25 years ago today. This has made a lot of people very sad and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

As I've noted before, I used to think this was basically a threat. But eventually I realized it's really just physics. It's like saying "Make it hot enough in a pressure cooker, with no escape valve, and it'll explode." Like, this is obvious if you think about it for a *single moment*.

I love the phrase "chaos goblin". So ... he could've *walked home* faster? And finally ... Why 10 years? That looks like maybe a year, tops. Just how long did he hang out with Circe, anyway? (No, I haven't read the Odyssey.)

Douglas Adams has entered the chat. (Yes, from the afterlife.)
These tales of impending doom allowed the Golgafrinchans to rid themselves of an entire useless third of their population. The story was that they would build three Ark ships. Into the A ship would go all the leaders, scientists and other high achievers. The C ship would contain all the people who made things and did things, and the B Ark would hold everyone else, such as hairdressers and telephone sanitisers. They sent the B ship off first, but of course, the other two-thirds of the population stayed on the planet and lived full, rich and happy lives until they were all wiped out by a virulent disease contracted from a dirty telephone.

I have said this before and I will say it again, but it is my firm belief that given the blatant and naked corruption exhibited by some members of the Roberts Court, decisions of the Roberts Court should not be treated as precedentially binding on later courts.

Fashion tips from nature. A very old comic that I still really like.
A comic called Fashion Tips from Nature. A dress with a monarch butterfly pattern is shown next to a dress with a viceroy pattern, with text that says "Poisonous? Share the news with bold stripes. Or coordinate with a toxic friend!" An owl moth with eyespots is shown next to shoes with eyespots on the toes, with text "Keep your dates on their toes with these terrifying eyespots." A row of tank tops are shown with text "These classic looks are timeless and practical." There's a leaf patterned one, a bark one, a bird poop one with a giant swallowtail caterpillar, and a tank top with a false head on it next to a hairstreak. A polo shirt with a yellow inflatable air sac is shown next to a greater prairie chicken and text that says "inflatable air sacs keep you party-ready." A hat with incredibly long king of saxony bird of paradise plumes is shown with text "Amaze your crush with your ability to sport this style, yet still move and find food."

I feel like "structurally *unaware* of the truth" is more accurate. Indifferent implies that they "know" what's true and are, well, indifferent to it. But they don't and can't. There's no there there to do the knowing with.

Asking an LLM something is just like asking a random stranger for a film review. What they tell you could very well be true, but you have no way of knowing that. You can't trust the source, because there may well be no source. It's just confident-sounding words.

I was thinking of an analogy for this the other day, specifically about trusted sources vs. AI output. What I think it's like is if you want to see a movie, and you don't really know anything about it (maybe title, genre, one actor in it, idk) so you do some research.

Never forget: 8 years ago a random person on Craigslist wrote the most effective ad for the Toyota Corolla, ever.
Images of an old silver 1999 Toyota Corolla for saleYou want a car that gets the job done? You want a car that's hassle free? You want a car that literally no one will ever compliment you on? Well look no further.
The 1999 Toyota Corolla.
Let's talk about features.
Bluetooth: nope
Sunroof: nope
Fancy wheels: nope
Rear view camera: nope...but it's got a transparent rear window and you have a fucking neck that can turn.
Let me tell you a story. One day my Corolla started making a strange sound. I didn't give a shit and ignored it. It went away. The End.
You could take the engine out of this car, drop it off the Golden Gate Bridge, fish it out of the water a thousand years later, put it in the trunk of the car, fill the gas tank up with Nutella, turn the key, and this puppy would fucking start right up.
This car will outlive you, it will outlive your children.
Things this car is old enough to do:
Vote: yesConsent to sex: yes
Rent a car: it IS a car
This car's got history. It's seen some shit. People have done straight things in this car. People have done gay things in this car. It's not going to judge you like a fucking Volkswagen would.
Interesting facts:
This car's exterior color is gray, but it's interior color is grey.
In the owner's manual, oil is listed as "optional."
When this car was unveiled at the 1998 Detroit Auto Show, it caused all 2,000 attendees to spontaneously yawn. The resulting abrupt change in air pressure inside the building caused a partial collapse of the roof. Four people died. The event is chronicled in the documentary "Bored to Death: The Story of the 1999 Toyota Corolla
You wanna know more? Great, I had my car fill out a Facebook survey.
Favorite food: spaghetti
Favorite tv show: Alf
Favorite band: tie between Bush and the Gin Blossoms
This car is as practical as a Roth IRA. It's as middle-of-the-When I ran the CarFax for this car, I got back a single piece of paper that said, "It's a Corolla, It's fine."
Let's face the facts, this car isn't going to win any beauty contests, but neither are you. Stop lying to yourself and stop lying to your wife. This isn't the car you want, it's the car you deserve: The fucking 1999 Toyota Corolla.

This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.

yeah, just out of interest, how many people choose the pen on the right for real work or art? See a lot of them in professional workplaces, do you?
Picture of two pens. The first is an ordinary ballpoint pen, with the caption “how work feels doing it alone”. The second is a picture of one of those novelty pens with ten colours that you had when you were thirteen, with the caption, “how work feels worh an AI employee”. At their bottom it says “hire an AI employee for $0.97/day”.

They left out that it also tastes distinctly of vinegar. I'm not sure I want to drink this stuff at all, ever again, never mind as some kind of amaretto substitute.
From their review:

"Woodnose's balanced option is not technically an amaretto—it’s made in Vermont from local maple syrup and aged in bourbon barrels, and it's vegan, organic, and gluten-free. using sustainably farmed ingredients. Yet, the rich drink has a lovely sweetness with roasted espresso notes and a salted caramel bitterness."

Has France ever said, just for fun, how much we owe them for their help in the US war for independence? "You might still be speaking English!" Or perhaps more horrifying to Americans, "You might be using the metric system!" I imagine both of these with an outrageous French accent.
