The press coverage of the Academy of Natural Sciences has gone from "Oh how sad" to sounding like a hostage negotiation. Which maybe sounds bad, but elected leaders, the press, the people online, all saying "You don't have to do this, man" is better than mourning. share.inquirer.com/YTQg0s

The Academy's 150-year-old building faces roughly $150 million in deferred maintenance costs. While that may seem daunting, it is not insurmountable.

NEW: Alexis Mercedes Rinck has proposed an amendment to Rob Saka's SAFER Streets Act that would give the City Traffic Engineer explicit authority to implement street changes in historic districts (Pioneer Square, Pike Place) without getting the approval of the local boards.
Effect: Currently, physical changes in designated historic, special review, and
landmark districts are reviewed by community volunteer boards facilitated through
the Department of Neighborhoods. The authority of the City Traffic Engineer to
construct traffic control devices, such as markers, signs and signal devices, used
to inform, guide and control traffic, including pedestrians, motor vehicle drivers,
and bicyclists, in these areas is unspecified. This amendment would clarify that
the City Traffic Engineer’s authority is over all City right-of-way, including
designated historic, special review, and landmark districts. It would also specify
that traffic control devices in such areas are not subject to landmark designation,
nor do construction of traffic control devices require a Certificate of Approval1. The
amendment allows the Traffic Engineer to coordinate with the Department of
Neighborhoods or the landmark preservation boards to minimize design conflicts
in alignment with the historic, cultural, architectural, or geographic significance of
the district.

Person driving at freeway speeds on I-90 Trail raises serious trail security concerns
Erik Josberger was on a light rail train crossing I-90 when he saw someone driving a white sedan in the biking and walking path going even faster than the train. As someone who has been biking in the area for a long time, it was a terrifying thing to see. He took out his phone and started recording, then called the police. Josberger posted two short video clips to the Seattle Cyclists Discord a few hours after it happened September 10, and then they were quickly posted across social media. The first clips show the driver going faster than the train and the traffic in the general lanes.

Over a 5-year period, there were 93 collisions in the area. 39 were injury collisions. 6 crashes injured people biking and 8 injured people walking. On nearby NE 65th St, a similar Safety Project reduced all crashes by 67%, with no fatal or serious-injury crashes after the redesign was completed.
We know safer street designs work
We have seen the difference this kind of work can make nearby. SDOT redesigned NE 65th St in Roosevelt and Ravenna after years of serious crashes. The project added safer crossings and turns, protected bike lanes, and a street design intended to reduce speeding and crashes.

The results were dramatic. After the redesign:

Crashes fell 67% on the western portion of NE 65th St. Pedestrian crashes there also fell 67%.
There were no fatal or serious-injury crashes after the full redesign was completed
The share of drivers traveling over 30 mph also dropped substantially

there is no such thing as "age verification." All "age verification" is actually "identity verification." You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper. But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware. Period.
