Wtaf is this question my university just asked me about my project?
Does the project involve any work that could be interpreted as promoting DEIA, climate change research, or non-compliant to any Presidential Executive Orders?

An important point that many miss is that mutational “supply” approximates infinity in nature, so what matters is “selection”. In practice, this means that features, including insertions that code for cleavage sites, come and go all the time, but we rarely, if ever, observe them. Until we do.

I co-sign this great summary from @dereklowe.bsky.social . The goal is to destroy academic science, and these are the reasons. And all the “gold standard” and “needs reform” and “not high risk” stuff is transparent bullshit to hide the ball on what they are doing.

Science
science. But let me make something clear right up front. When I talk to people about this subject (and that includes some journalists as well) and say what I'm about to at the end of this paragaph I am sometimes met with disbelief. But I mean what I say and I am trying my best to say what I mean: The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.
That's it. That's the story. They are naturally not putting it in those words, but instead talking about "gold standard science" and the
"reproducibility crisis" and funding "bold inquiry" for "transformational
breakthroughs". This is all bullshit, and it's important to realize that. Shameless hand-waving bullshit, delivered in a how-dare-vou-

This article in Le Monde about French research in general and the CNRS in particular has a few depressing graphs www.lemonde.fr/sciences/art...
The graph highlights a growing divergence between Germany and France:

* In the mid-1990s, France and Germany spent similar shares of GDP on R&D.
* Germany subsequently increased its R&D investment by about 1 percentage point of GDP.
* France’s R&D effort remained largely stagnant.
* By 2023, Germany spends 3.15% of GDP on R&D compared with 2.18% in France, a gap of nearly 1 percentage point of GDP.
* France is also well below the OECD average (2.93%).

The figure therefore illustrates that France has fallen behind both Germany and the OECD average in R&D intensity over the past three decades.

Great slide by Thomas Hansen on the importance of theory in evolutionary biology! #EED2026
Photo of a slide saying:
A theoretical perspective
• Francis Crick: "the job of theorists, especially in biology, is to suggest new experiments". (Crick 1988)
• A bit narrow.
• The role of theory is to suggest:
1. New concepts, abstractions and models
2. New hypotheses, perspectives and interpretations
3. New ways of measurement
• New experiments follow.
• Evolvability is a new concept (arguably), and it is associated with new perspectives and questions about the evolutionary process.
• Some of these questions from far back, but evolvability provides an abstraction, an umbrella, for a certain class of questions about evolution.
