The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

Wtaf is this question my university just asked me about my project?
Does the project involve any work that could be interpreted as promoting DEIA, climate change research, or non-compliant to any Presidential Executive Orders?

Back of the envelope calculations: 3600 years of research time went into the collective application process. The research will fund 3200 years of research. We are 400 research years poorer as a result of this. 1/2

if we match the output of PhD students to the input of academia jobs, what's preventing people in charge to decrease that input even further and making us go back to square one?

For the second part though, in a context where we don't decide how much resources we are given, it feels to me like capitulating in advance:

I also think that saying that there are too many PhD students shifts the blame onto those PhD students, which I don't think is really the case

Théotime Grohens @tgrohens.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Personally, I prefer the second option, along with a broader recognition of the value of PhD degrees in society for those that don't continue in academia!
100
Théotime Grohens @tgrohens.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
So we can try to decrease the number of PhDs, looking for those positions; or, we can also ask for more academic positions -- keeping in mind that there will never be enough for everyone.
100
Théotime Grohens @tgrohens.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I think that: - as a society, we benefit from having more people with PhDs (as long as PhDs remain well-earned, but I have no reason to believe otherwise) - as I said before, there will always be a surplus of PhD students wrt available academic positions.

Théotime Grohens @tgrohens.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I would be curious about stats about what percentage of PhD students go on to do a postdoc for example. I would be curious whether this has increased recently, or if the number of available positions has decreased.

Of course, none of this is to say that we shouldn't also focus on improving quality of life, pay, etc. for PhD students.
100
Théotime Grohens @tgrohens.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Also, I believe that: - not all PhD students enroll with the goal of an academic career and that's OK - it is indeed the responsibility of PhD supervisors to make their students well aware that an academic career is, by far, not the most probable outcome of the PhD career-wise
100
Théotime Grohens @tgrohens.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Personally, I would rather focus on working towards a broader recognition for society outside of academia of the skills that a PhD degree confers, and how these can be useful in many other settings!

Théotime Grohens @tgrohens.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
What makes you think that there is overproduction of PhD students? The lack of employments prospects within academia? My take is that, in a (hypothetical) steady state, a researcher needs to train only a single PhD student to replace them. So more than that is already overproduction in those terms?

The Editors have retracted this Article.

After publication, concerns were raised about the animal work reported in this paper. The Animal Ethics Committee of Butantan Institute confirmed that the approval granted to the Authors for their research on snakes (Bothrops jararaca) did not include newborn snakes or the use of the “soft stepping” method.

All authors disagree with this retraction.

I would argue that different kinds of mutations lead to different, possibly intertwined, evolutionary dynamics with different timescales (and so there are different "real drivers" in different circumstances). Why wouldn't be those large-scale mutations representable by (very rare) random vectors?

An important point that many miss is that mutational “supply” approximates infinity in nature, so what matters is “selection”. In practice, this means that features, including insertions that code for cleavage sites, come and go all the time, but we rarely, if ever, observe them. Until we do.
