They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Everything is shit. This is a strange thing to say, but HK is relatively lucky. You still remember us. Even if it's only to say look at them arresting book sellers, our country will soon do the same thing. Even if it's because you came to visit once, the food was nice, so sad to see it like this

There were protesters in 2019-2020 who specifically protested against becoming a Chinese colony. It might seem outright contradictory that some also yearned for a return to British rule, but then HKSARG used the colonial-era sedition laws more and also more gleefully than the British ever did, so

admitting you were wrong about something costs you absolutely nothing and i wish more people understood that. i train people for a living, i get things wrong live and in real time in front of people to whom it matters a lot for their jobs, acknowledgement is always better than denial.

She should be sacked, and then we should ask how and why the main left party going very hard into National Front crackdowns, rhetoric and imagery - a thing that horrifies their own members - earned them the roaring approval of the British press. Because that’s the core issue, right there.

It's also another example of ppl who apparently only think in over-simplistic political dichotomies – there are only two sides, and if one side is wrong, the other side must therefore be right. USA bad = China good, etc. I mean, come on – you call yourself an intellectual saying stuff like that? 2/2

I do think that the relentless focus on electoral politics has also warped ideas of organizing on other fronts. The model's not electoral campaigns under gentry management, it's asymmetric conflict in a dying empire. Cohesiveness, solidarity and determination matter a lot more than "big tents."

To reiterate, "Only white people are capable of empire, slavery or atrocity" - that only white people can do the worst of sins - is itself still a form of white supremacism that imagines white people as the unique protagonists of history rather than recognizing that all people have agency.

This isn't even just a US thing. It's just a fact that even the most rudimentary state actors are generally capable of exponentially greater terror-inducing violence than a cell-based jihadist network. The median UN member state probably does more terrorism than Al-Qaeda.

Something else that I thinks really needs emphasising: the police were the ones with the guns, who shot the (plastic and other) bullets, the tear gas. They were the ones with the water cannons, that shot the blue liquid that not only were meant to mark out protestors but also caused pain.

That 🧵 also mentions the police attacking people. And I really think this needs emphasizing: that so often, you see the 2019-20 Hong Kong protests described as "violent" -- sometimes with the classifying "sometimes", sometimes not, but almost never that much/the majority of it was by the police.

"Herein lies the core of Hong Kong’s tragedy... Britain never gave the city the right to elect its leader, but it had the superstructure of a democratic society: marches and demonstrations, a free and competitive media, a pluralist political culture with opposition parties and so on...
In such a society, it is natural and legitimate to protest in pursuit of one’s aims. But to a security-focused, one-party state, any autonomous organized network capable of mobilizing large crowds is likely to look more like an attempted color revolution, probably instigated or fomented by foreign actors. This is exactly the party’s view of the 2019 protests, which is a calumny on the intelligence and independent-mindedness of Hong Kong’s young people. Chinese state media has for years branded Wong as an anti-China separatist, traitor and pawn of hostile foreign forces.
