Geoffrey Hinton admitted he was wrong that AI would replace radiologists. Healthcare demand is elastic, so cheaper/faster scan reading creates more scans, and radiologists do more than interpret images. What many people fail to consider is AI automating tasks is not the same as eliminating the job

We should regulate pollution directly instead of using land use policy and private-party litigation over projects’ compliance with public disclosure laws to fight over where pollution happens.

I wonder how many other people think “the speed limit isn’t really for me, it underestimates my skill” and just aren’t willing to say it out loud like this person
agreed. a sign/camera does not know better than I do what the appropriate speed is for traffic, road conditions, my vehicle, my skills, etc.; we implicitly require drivers to make such judgements but then punish them for doing so

Mamdani would be an idiot not to do this. But I think there are two bad aspects to this: 1) It shows that it's too hard for people to report potholes or other minor problems to the city bureaucracy which, in theory, could get all the work done more efficiently.

Because there’s no agent or plan to block, “opposing gentrification” really is synonymous with opposing development, of businesses and housing. Literally encouraging disinvestment. The better option is to target the harms it can cause - displacement - by building more housing.

I get it: politics is adjacent to big, important moral questions. But if you actually want to work on those, you have to convince a lot of self-interested people to vote for you. Yes, capitalize on worries about gas prices to get good people elected. "See I told you so" isn't a winning message!

Every policy has tradeoffs. “I am willing to tolerate poorer people getting priced out of my neighborhood to maintain its 19th century aesthetic” is a perfectly fine thing to believe but you should be willing to say that with your whole chest.

9. Also you must know, the laws during Jim Crow never explicitly said that Black people couldn't vote. That was illegal. What they did was create "race neutral statutes" that *just so happened* to mostly affect Black people

Culture flourishes in places with abundant and inexpensive floor space. If you want cool bars, restaurants, art galleries, nightclubs, and theaters, you need (a) lots of cheap housing for workers, and (b) lots of commercial spaces where people can open a small business on a shoestring budget.

It's actually a huge problem that most people own their homes and that the dominant narrative is that it is an "investment." At precisely some of the important times when you want to sell your home, like economic downturns or new climate understanding, it has lost a chunk of its value.
