I am yet again encouraging people to spent like 5 hours a week volunteering for a campaign. Make it a state leg or municipal one, you will get to know the candidate and this may change your view of how politics works

remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

I think the sentiment expressed by Jacob Rees-Mogg is generally quite nice and reflective of a certain "cultured chauvinism" that is entirely compatible with a multicultural, multiethnic civilization. The idea that one ought to "join in to the society to which they belong" is quite good, I think.

Ossoff: When you step back and consider it, the situation is absurd. Tech titans dig bunkers and warn us the new intelligence they're training could lead to mass joblessness or human extinction, while our Congress debates ballrooms and youth sports.
We've amassed enough firepower to end the world 1,000 times over, but we can't summon the will to guarantee health care and pre-K. I say all this to say, but it's the crushing weakness of our politics, against the unmet needs of our people and the massive stakes of our times, that's shaking our faith in the future.

More to the point, this is happening in *non-white* countries as well: Japan, Turkey, and India have huge far-right nativist blocs. So it's not merely white supremacy or nostalgia for the days when the West ruled. Nor is it happening purely in developed post-material countries.

Brilliant h/t to @segyges.bsky.social (included helpful context/explainer)
THE INTERNET MAKES ALL POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS INTO MAOISM

LEFT WING? MAOISTS. NORMAL MAOISM. RIGHT WING? MAOISTS. SCHIZOID MAOISM.

LIBERTARIANS, GREENS, NAZIS, ANARCHISTS, SOCIALISTS, THEOCRATS, POSADISTS? MAOISM.

CENTRISM? SOMEHOW, ALSO A FORM OF MAOISM. IT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE BUT IT'S TRUE.**Root Beer Man**: sorry, what's the meaning of this word, "maoism"? i may be just a small-town hayseed who's read a bunch of mao, but i was pretty sure it has to do with peasants

**SE Gyges**: every affiliation claims to speak for the common man, who is perpetually venerated, and to brand their enemies as the enemies of that common man. it feels real peasant-worshippy

**Root Beer Man**: populism sure. no dispute. in my OPINION though, maoism is slightly more defined than that

**Root Beer Man**: basically i think postinternet politics are so radically incoherent that naming them after historical Guys, except possibly someone like mussolini, is like, more misleading than not at this point. just rabid hyper individualist or maybe identitarian populism

**Wannabe Apparatchik**: i think the other reason "maosism" is funny as a descriptor is the vibes-based economic illiteracy of so much modern populism

**SE Gyges**: that + the rabid anti-intellectualism + the absurd eagerness to negatively polarize against people and things are all really hard to compact into a descriptor that isn't just "maoism"

**SE Gyges**: paranoid, anti-intellectual, economically illiterate identitarian populism that is eager to declare and denounce enemies

or, uh, just maoism

I think 'earning' or 'deserving' or 'good' billionaires or 'bad' billionaires are all sort of missing the point tbh. There are decent people who are billionaires and there are unobjectionable ways to make lots of money but that's not the point. The point is that level of unaccountable power is bad.
