And it's not like Mamdani's NYC doesn't have wealthy opposition or an ideologically stratified city council. I don't think MBJ was ever going to be able to do everything he wanted the first term (and I personally haven't given up on him), but some self-reflection would be nice.

"Chicago already has a Mamdani" — it doesn't seem like most of Chicago thinks this! Some of this might be a comms issue on the part of the administration, not knowing how to communicate wins, but there have also been many clear fumbles related to staffing, strategy, collab with the state, etc.

Of course, there should be more awareness from the public about what their alder is doing, but it seems very convenient for the Brandon Johnson administration and allies to believe that all barriers to implementing policy have been external, when anyone with eyes can see there have missteps.

This recent narrative that's emerged on the left that "Chicago doesn't have a mayor problem, it has an alderman problem" is not sitting well with me. 🧵

We are rapidly losing the outlets where new writers can learn to shape a voice, where they can cultivate skills beyond quick news hits and PR with the guidance and mentorship of strong editors and the benefit of a trusted name, and it’s such a loss for writers and readers alike.

Ryan Grim: "You cannot consolidate the progressive vote today while saber-rattling war with China. That era is over."
Responding to Ettingermentum: "Wow. Infuriating. We all know whose fault this is for not dropping out. That's right: Laura Fine for not allowing Kat to consolidate the pro-war vote."

good reminder that before the counting is over, election results don’t tighten. at no point is anyone trailing. nobody moves closer. they’re just tabulating the polls. it’s a fixed number that just isn’t done yet. to say otherwise is bad journalism but even worse math.
