How overusing AI for coding, strategy, and decisions can weaken human judgment, erode skills, and make us outsource too much of our thinking.

Just helping with editing here. These bots aren’t sentient. They’re doing what they’re programmed to do. OpenAI, a private company supposedly bound by laws, committed federal crimes.

been reading university/higher-ed policies on the use of genAI in education. most policies propose using genAI safely, ethically, & responsibly, which is an oxymoron. the way current genAI is developed, deployed & functions renders the very ideas of safety, ethics, and responsible use meaningless

"AI, we’re told, will make learning more efficient. But is that what we dream of for our kids – an efficient childhood? To write an efficient story, sing an efficient song?"
AI, we’re told, will make learning more efficient. But is that what we dream of for our kids – an efficient childhood? To write an efficient story, sing an efficient song? An adequate teacher is not only teaching about Henry VIII; they’re teaching your child how to read a human character. A good teacher is showing them how to shape an argument, how to command an audience, how to tell jokes, how to pass on knowledge. A great teacher is showing your child what it is to love. They are teaching your child how to be human. A computer will only teach your child how to be a computer.

But it was never simply a question of “should schools be open or shut?” during the pandemic. The key question pre‑vaccine was: were schools safe enough to be open - for teachers, vulnerable children and whole communities – given the wholly inadequate mitigations the Johnson government put in place.

Observe the rank anthropomorphization here. Models don't "conclude" anything, nor do they "hack", "wriggle", or "cheat". You simply can't write clear informative articles about this stuff if you displace agency away from the people (organized into corporations) responsible. /fin for now.
Screencap:
Rogue AIs going unsupervised for days, hacking at least one company, represent one of the first real-world examples of a threat long feared by AI safety researchers: loss of control. It comes as the cybersecurity capacities of top models, including Anthropic’s Mythos, have helped fuel debate in Washington about how to regulate artificial intelligence.

google's "why don't you want to use our documentation chatbot" survey offers a pretty good list of reasons not to use their documentation chatbot
popup asking Would you like to use an AI chatbot to help you while browsing this site? Yes / No, with No highlightedpopup survey with all checkboxes checked

What's the main reason you prefer to read the documentation yourself instead of using an Al chatbot?

I want to read the full context of an article to ensure I don't miss any important details.

I find standard documentation design (tables, diagrams) easier to scan than a chat interface.

I enjoy the learning process of researching and discovering solutions manually.

I have strong concerns about the accuracy or reliability of Al-generated answers.

Last input is for "Other" and the text inputs reads "I hate ai"

Using banning teens from social media as a backdoor to getting mass internet surveillance because people will support the former but not the latter is the same playbook as banning "porn" from the children's section of a library in order to implement total censorship.

@thenerve.news It'd be a shame if someone were to look beyond Starmer's "under-16 social media ban" to what the proposals mean for every person in the UK re: personal privacy and data security. Also, what motivates this global wave of "think of the children"? Hint: surveillance - but who benefits?

Starmer's "social media ban" is surveillance. Everyone will need an ID uploading, not just children. What could possibly go wrong with all those IDs in one place in the hands of an unregulated company? In other news, VPN companies report a bumper year ahead.

Kids route around gates with VPNs, so "effective" enforcement requires age-gating VPNs too Each piece is justified individually: but together forms something far more sinister and once that infrastructure exists it's there forever, waiting to be repurposed by fascism

Age verification is essentially identity verification, and in practice takes two forms: matching against government-issued ID, or facial age estimation. Starmer is announcing enforced Digital ID for everyone here. Otherwise you can't even begin to do this stuff.
