A very detailed square Roman mosaic. The centre is a circle made up of multiple triangular black and white sections surrounded by a circle with a wave pattern. You can only just see different bids in each corner. This is all surround by various brown, white and black borders.

Standing beneath the escarpment of Whinny nab, Malo cross was erected in 1619 by Sir Richard Egerton as a boundary marker for his manor and still marks the boundary between the parishes of Allerston and Lockton. Its initials are carved into the sandstone. The cross

An amazing glimpse into Mesolithic everyday life: this more than 7,500-year-old ring was made from heather roots, carefully rolled up and prepared for later use. It was discovered at the settlement of Motala/Sweden, where the same material was used for fish traps. Dating 5750–5550 BC. 🧵1/2 📷me

A house that I surveyed has been listed; this is a first for Triskele Heritage! Following fieldwork at 45 Cliff Street in Whitby, the landowner sent the report to Historic England as supporting evidence for why the building should be listed grade II... and they accepted it🙂

This made me smile, attached to an ordinary cast iron drainpipe on a house in Durham. #TinyJoys
A cast iron drain pipe going down the side of a white-painted house.  A crest of red feathers and a bright orange beak made from something solid have been attached around it.  It looks remarkably like "Feathers McGraw", the evil criminal penguin from The Wrong Trousers.

It’s wonderful to see our research finally out. It shows that the amazing Devil’s Arrows in Boroughbridge, Yorkshire were transported 18km from Brimham Rocks (not Plumpton!) to the site. royalsocietypublishing.org/rspa/article/4…

As a percentage of total employment, since 1948 when the data starts, Central government employment is today the highest on record. Local government employment is today the lowest on record. Some context for Andy Burnham's promise to try and reverse this trend.

There's 5,000 year old cairns on Orkney, Scotland where people have carved their names over the years, and you can still see some Viking (800-1300) and Pict (300-900) carvings where people stumbled across them and decided to leave their mark.

The GCT on the cartouche at the bottom of this rather battered metal box on High Street indicates it's one of the few remaining parts of Glasgow's once extensive tram network. Boxes like this provided an electrical connection to the overhead wires that powered them. #glasgow #streetfurniture

One of my fave things in York Minster: a medieval wren stalking a spider. It reminds me that history isn't only kings and battles. Someone, centuries ago, found joy in the same things we still notice today. It's a reminder of how much we have in common over our differences.

Thirsty Weasels stop by for a quick sip, paw wash & face splash... There are 2 weasels coming to drink at the moment - a smaller younger animal & a more adult mustelid. I've never seen them drink before... but the environment is so dry. Still loads of voles & mice around the #weedypond. #mustelids

The Edinburgh Yorkshire Society formed in 1893 by "independent and prosperous Yorkshiremen" in the city 🏵️ It reformed in Leith in 1929, 150 members singing "On Ilkla' Moor" to celebrate. In 1990 they sponsored the white rose mosaic laid on Rose Street, and in 1991 donated 2 benches to the street
