"Job Trail" is like Oregon Trail, but for finding a job in the age of AI. I died many times but eventually made it! (Kinda, new job pays less than the old job did.) labs.ficuscreative.com/job_trail/

No one gets a PhD in "what if the people in charge of the Pentagon are chud idiots and they collapse the world economy because caring about strategy is Woke and Gay". But that is (self-evidently) a far more likely thing to happen, simply because it only requires stupidity to accomplish.

I've spent a lot of years studying a lot of collapses, and the truth of the matter is that they're always mundane: mild climatic shifts that reduce crop yields, a dumbass in power who makes some terrible decisions, neglecting things that obviously matter but the will to fix them can't be summoned.

Watched Odyssey yesterday evening with German subtitles (no choice in the matter in Swiss cinema.) During the whirlpool scene the subtitles kept saying something-something-Strudel. I was yesterday years old when I learned the German word for whirlpool (and swirl and vortex) is… der Strudel.

The conclusion is NOT "we need to debias LLMs" Besides that it's impossible, it also detracts from the point, which is: We shouldn't use machines to offload of the very cognition that is constitutive of the work to be done & supercharge existing inequities and injustices in the process. 🧵

It’s tricky, isn’t it? ;-) The photo is originally taken as 1-bit and I overlaid a color gradient on it myself in post-processing. So the final image is not 1-bit… I did tune the color gradient manually to progress through two blue colors into green so it kinda matches the sky-lake-grass composition

BitCam is most fun you can have with 1-bit photography (it’s a lot of fun).
1-bit photo of view in front of my house. There’s Zugersee in the middle, with a green slope and a small house in front of it and the ginormous pine tree next to our balcony that I love so much. I added linear gradient to the 1-bit photo to color the sky and the lake blue and the slope green

Something to bear in mind as things get harder, from a 2009 Metafilter post from someone who lives through Sarajevo.
Metafilter post from Dee Extrovert part 1: Well, unlike the majority of you (l assume), 1 actually lived several years in a period of savagery and killing, during which nothing - food, water, electricity, phone, clothing, sense of safety, school, the ability to go out in public, etc - was available, except during totally unpredictable, brief and sporadic occasions.
Of those who couldn't leave my city, Sarajevo:
Some people (very few) were prepared for what they thought would be the "long haul" - this tended to be a couple of months. These people were widely seen as lunatics and dangerously pessimistic ones at that.
Most people were not at all prepared. This included my family. Many of those - like my family - considered the idea of "preparation" to be an affront to the decency we felt most people possessed. Were we wrong? Well, I don't know. We suffered greatly; my parents were killed. But speaking only for myself, I never felt I cheapened my soul by betting on calamity.
Today, that still feels like it's worth something.Metafilter post from Dee Extrovert part 2: But here's the main point: "Preparing" for the disaster really didn't do anyone much good. Those who
"prepared" ate a little better for a while. They stayed warmer for a few extra days. They enjoyed the radio for a while longer (via batteries.) But in the end, they ended up hungry, cold and bored too, just like the rest of us. Guns and weapons helped no one directly and were even of little to no use in the defense of Sarajevo, since they were toys compared to the shells, bombs and high-powered armaments of the attacking forces.
The worst parts of war were psychological - the fear, anxiety, boredom, loneliness, paranoia, bad dreams.
Respite from those things came with sharing food with a neighbor, finding a piece of clothing that would fit someone you knew, commiserating with others in your position, figuring out how to make make-up from brick or french fries from wheat paste and spreading this newly-acquired war knowledge around the mahala.
We knew who had extra food and supplies. For the most part, they weren't attacked or hassled or bothered. Contrary to what these survivalists say, those in dire times generally hold on to their personal sense of pride even more than they do in normal times. I'd take a bite of a friend's salad without bothering to ask in normal times. I'd never have done that in wartime, no matter how hungry I was.Metafilter post from Dee Xtrovert: Well, unlike the majority of you (l assume), 1 actually lived several years in a period of savagery and killing, during which nothing - food, water, electricity, phone, clothing, sense of safety, school, the ability to go out in public, etc - was available, except during totally unpredictable, brief and sporadic occasions.

I don't think they are that astonishing though - I think they're a tremendous amount of computational power used in a quite novel way, but ultimately the cost of keeping them running is too high for us to sustain. I don't think it's impressive to liquidate society to do brute force statistics.

Even when you don’t have anything explicitly stacked against you, it’s still learning customs and languages and uprooting social ties (friends, family) and trying to build new ones, often not feeling like you belong. None of it is easy, even on easy mode.

Can confirm. I moved countries 4 times. First was not of my own volition (to Hungary as an underage refugee from war in Yugoslavia in 1991) but I did what you did on relatively “easy mode” (plus kids) to US, to Sweden, and finally to Switzerland.

Honestly, i don't understand this economy when nursing homes are so expensive they bankrupt our grandparents but nursing home aides need to use food banks.
daycare is so expensive it eats up one parent's entire paycheck and yet daycare providers only make $10/hr and need second jobs.
college costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and puts students into debt for life and yet we have thousands of professors living in their cars.
everything we need is astronomically expensive and yet almost none of the money we pay is going towards the people actually doing the work and providing the services.
