Started as a little study and became another one of the 'Secret Society of Unpractical Headpieces in Space' series (that still does not exist) 🪐
Illustration by Eleonor Piteira showing a black woman with an elaborate golden headpiece. Her hair is curly and long, she's wearing a dress, and gold and blue make up on her eyes. She is framed by a circle and behind her there is a space view with a star and small planets.

Let's talk $$$ We spent 3x on the convention this year. Last year's convention raised more than $17k. This year? We're sitting at $13.5k. That sounds like a lot, but friends, we TRIPLED how much we spent on the event. And we've made a LOT less. Help us out? flights-of-foundry.org/donate/
A graphic with a teal background. The Flights of Foundry logo is prominent in the middle, with the word DONATE beneath. The text is surrounded by gryphons - Hoodini, a barn owl gryphon walks along the top of the logo; Toast, a white cockatiel gyrphon sits up straight on the right side of the logo; Bartholomew, a purple harpy eagle gryphon stretches on the bottom, and Swooperton, a bald eagle gryphon is swooping up in the bottom corner.

Critique partners often give feedback suggesting more explanation/world-building is needed as well. It is a natural instinct to do so when trying to offer help. But the well-seasoned author should learn when to ignore that and trust the story and the readers.

I sincerely believe that algorithms calibrated toward outrage/anger have created an atmosphere where shallow/lazy readings of media are rewards with actual money, and the exhausting discourse cycles over people not understanding subtext is getting into the heads of writers

The misguided need to identify with the protagonist missed half the point of reading. We know this because marginalized people read in spite of our underrepresentation and/or misrepresentation in all forms of media. Not because we're Virtue signaling, because there's extractable value in

something that irritates me is the implicit assumption that artisinal local news will be left-wing (or, at the very least, not right wing) when even a cursory examination of US history shows that local journalism has been a bastion of hate for basically our entire existence
