I read this article again in the context of also just rewatching Verhoeven's Starship Troopers and reading about how audiences and critics initially thought it was a film valorising war and fascism. People can be comically bad at recognising satire.

Kay Vaindal is back in STP with An American Execution. A woman travels to witness the resurrection-execution of one of the 9/11 hijackers with the daughter of her abducted neighbour and her boyfriend who claims to be an emissary from another universe. Dark and wacky in pure Vaindal-esque fashion.

This is excellent Weird fiction with a flair of Vonnegut. A resurrection execution. A boyfriend who claims he is a representative of the Intergalactic Council on Sentient Life. An abandoned girl. Do humans have empathy? "...but this is the new world, where unusual is usual..." sounds about right.

It’s about time we had a reckoning with the need so many writers feel to over-explain everything aspect of their stories, even in non Weird genres. Readers don’t need to be babied. Let us figure things out. Leave room for interpretation. Over-explanation makes writing worse.
