When an AI summarizes a text, it is not "reading," in any way close to what happens with humans. It is more accurate to call an AI summary a "compression." Compression of huge bodies of text can be very useful, but I think it's necessary to hold on to the distinction between compression and summary.

the one rule of India about ruling India that has been true for 3500 years is that anyone can rule but they rule exactly as long as the public is willing to be ruled and it's always for less long than you'd think

The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

the speed at which human beings move from "this terrible thing exists" to "everyone just has to learn to live with it" is truly alarming and illuminating. Immediately moving to compliance. Watching this in real time is incredible.

We need a party that starts out with a sense of its own convictions: Good government, an equitable and just society, zero tolerance for dictators, capitalist vultures, and foreign genociders. This is basic human morality and people are showing right now that this is what they thirst for.

Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5,000 years.

This would be a difficult story to report, because nobody would want to go on the record about it, but the actually important story about American schools is the persistence of thousands of teachers who give their kids what we know they need despite the barrage of mandates, standards, tests, etc—

Everyone who was against the PATRIOT Act 20 years ago was called a terrorist sympathizer. Many don’t remember the world before it. Background checks didnt even exist the way they do now prior to it. The surveillance state became normal. Just like they said it would All in the name of “anti-terror”
After 9/11, the U.S. built an anti-terror apparatus. Trump is using it at home.
Waning attention to international terrorism and other threats has former officials worried.

RIP Wendell Berry.
THE DEAD CALF
Dead at the pasture edge, his head is without eyes, becalmed on the grass. There was no escaping the heaviness that came on him, the darkness that rose
nder his belly as though he stoo 1 a black sucking poo
Earth's weight grew in him, and he lay down. As he died a great bird took his eyes.
Where is the horror in it?
Not in him, for he came to it as a shadow into the night.
It was nameless and familiar.
He was fitted to it. In me is where the horror is. In my mind he does not yield. I cannot believe the deep peace that has come to him.
I am afraid that where the light is torn there is a wound.
There is a darkness in the soul that loves the eyes. There is a light in the mind that sees only light and will not enter the darkness.
But I would have a darkness in my mind like the dark the dead calf makes for a time
on the grass where he lies, and will make in the earth as he is carried down.
May all dead things lie down in me and be at peace, as in the ground.

Students are often portrayed as antagonists/perpetrators in AI cheating stories, and surely some of them are—I won't entirely dismiss their capacity to make choices. But students are also the main victims. The real villains are not living in dorms or going into debt to learn nothing.
