I'm a straight, cis woman and it took me until my 40s to realize that the otherwise decent guys I had been with didn't regard women as true peers. It was unconscious on all our parts. But women were always "demoted"; our experiences and opinions always less *real* to these men.

As a straight, cisgender woman, I have had to leave at three close-knit mixed gender and orientation groups due to extremely toxic straight, cisgender men who were allowed or even encouraged to behave abusively to others. These were chronic, public behaviors. No one was allowed to criticize them.
