I'm becoming increasingly radicalised against this project. Not the concept of a square so much, but definitely this implementation. Can you really have a European-style square without umbrellas, tables and the ability to buy a beer or wine?

City of Sydney can't be serious with this proposal. These deserve at best a plaque, after they've been demolished and replaced by desperately needed housing for people.

It provides evidence of efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of children and families in our local area. This former kindergarten is a representative example of the kindergartens designed by the City of Sydney after World War 2. But aside from that, it's the right thing to do. There are rezonings happening all over Sydney in a bid to fix the last 30+ years of planning failures. No reason why the eastern suburbs should get a pass on that

I'm not sure I'd put much stock in Farrelly or her followers. Always talks about supporting density, but never actually supports real proposals to densify. The political reality is there's no downside to this for the state govt. It's not like they're worried about losing the electorate of Vaucluse!

I think Dom might have written one of the tightest synthesis of why the arguments of NIMBYs against densification are incoherent and just plain wrong here. While this time it's about Woollahra, we've seen and heard the same arguments all over Australia and the world.

“Gentrification” is a cursed word: - It means 11 things to 10 people. My definition: it's too much money chasing too little housing. - In many cities, the worst displacement from housing scarcity happened decades ago. - Those same “gentrified” cities are now undergoing aristocratization.

"Police said the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet." Who cares? A bicycle helmet isn't designed to protect cyclists against cars. "At this time, speed, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision, police said." Speed is absolutely a factor, to the 2nd power.

It was never beautiful. I have a fix. Fill it with trees, tables and chairs, and umbrellas or some other sort of cover. Open up bars in the surrounding area and allow them to serve patrons in the square.

Australian cities love to talk about European style squares, but almost never do the thing that makes them successful. The ability to have a drink in the square The usual suspects whinge about commercialising public space, and we wind up with a simulacrum of a town square

Or as it's described here, "affordable" housing. Politicians love spruiking it as a solution to housing affordability, but it is anything but. What is needed is more housing across the board inflectionpoints.work/a/against-af...

I've spent my whole adult life hearing how we need to prioritise old buildings over providing housing for people. And it comes from the same people who lament sprawl and the lack of public housing. Would they be OK if the housing in Woollahra was built and owned by the government? I'm guessing not

Likewise Market St has 3 lanes of one-way traffic, a parking lane for taxis, no space for bikes at all, and possibly the most overcrowded footpaths in Sydney. Yet the tunnel underneath is underused.
