As of this year, it's a criminal offence to promote a tax avoidance scheme that has no reasonable prospect of success. I hope HMRC are investigating the individuals behind this.

Amazing investigation by TaxWatch into an offshore tax advice network that appears to be linked to Craig Whyte, the disgraced former owner of Rangers. The network may be fake. The advice is bogus. Anyone following it is going to end up in a bad place.

Why are Russia banned from playing football by authorities but Israel are not? Both stand accused of an illegal war and atrocities, Israel of a genocide. The response to Russia was swift. Are these double standards? Is it a level playing field?

Nick Candy and Holly Valance. Britain’s most expensive house. A £265m sale. Usual consequence: £32m of stamp duty. But five small flats were included in the sale. By an extraordinary happy accident, that cut the tax by £18.5m. The curious sale of Nick Candy’s mansion A 🧵:

If HMRC can't or won't challenge, or if a challenge fails, the government should close the loophole and change the law. Otherwise, we're going to see lots of high-end properties being sold with five teeny flats.

Of the 33 peer reviewed and highly successful papers Jason Arday produced, only two have been challenged. They were cleared once. They will be cleared again. But of those two only 3% has been cited as problematic. So 3% of 7% of his output. Can anyone do the math that makes Arday a plagiarist?

5/ We see compulsory voting as a response to that. Because voting is a duty - if we expect people to pay taxes or do jury service, why don't we expect them to take part in our democratic system? And because many more of us are less well represented because of low and unequal turnout.

6/ What we are proposing is an Australia style system, with non-voting coming at the cost of a £10 fine. In Australia, that system has seen turnout fall below 90 percent only once since its introduction over 100 years ago. Similar results in Belgium, Chile, Singapore.

7/ This is NOT about forcing people to vote for any party they don't support - as in Australia, ballots should include a "none of the above" option. And it should be accompanied by measures to make voting easier - like bank holidays for election days.

The Times corrects its splash story headlined "Migrant care workers bring dozens of family members." The Times got this totally wrong. It then used its own error as the basis for an editorial calling explicitly for forced expulsions of people living here legally. www.thetimes.com/comment/regi...
In a headline and a leading article we said migrant care workers were each bringing up to 15 family members with them (News, Comment, Jul 6). This was incorrect. The ratio of 15 to 1 was that of new visa approvals for Cameroonian care workers to visa approvals for family members of all Cameroonian care workers already in the UK in 2025-26. The same applies to arrivals from Ghana, Bangladesh and India. There is no connection between new visa approvals for care workers, who are not allowed to bring any dependants at all, and visas issued to the family members of care workers who were here already.
