UN Ambassador Mike Waltz’s longtime chief of staff left the NSC and State Dept. last year. In Sept., Ballard Partners registered him to lobby the White House on Venezuelan oil for Argentine-owned Aldyl Energia. Today’s filing: Aldyl paid Ballard $200K last quarter, and he’s quietly off the account.

Manderlay is no Dogville, Bryce Dallas Howard is no Kidman, yet here Lars von Trier is very Lars von Trier (aesthetically on point, inconsistent and liable to be provocative in some occasionally offputting ways)

57 min left in Lars von Trier's Manderlay and I can say this film is fucking bizarre lol. With all the awkward trappings of European observations of US "race relations" (in 2005 parlance). I know it's somewhat allegorical, but still

Album cover for Björk's acclaimed 1997 album Homogenic. Björk is centered from waist up on an icy white-grey background, wearing an Alexander McQueen-designed kimono, wearing geisha-inspired makeup, accessorized in a column of gold neck rings, and stylized with two Princess Leia-esque saucers of hair buns on each side of her head.

Officer Scott strikes again, redux. Mayor Brandon Scott loves policing and the surveillance state reinforcing yt supremacy at the expense of Black and brown people, most especially **immigrants**. Baltimore City is complicit with federal ops no matter what the "sanctuary city" rhetoric tells you
Mayor Brandon Scott voted to approve the Axon contract as a member of the Board of Estimates. ALPRs are part of Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott’s longer-term budget plans for the city.

Scott released a 10-year financial plan in December. It included modernizing traffic control and parking enforcement using ALPR technology, though it didn’t mention using the cameras for other policing purposes. The new Axon deal could be a significant boost of BPD’s existing license plate reader technology. More than a quarter of Maryland’s one billion ALPR scans in 2024 happened in the city.

Just horrific—I assumed this was a big factory raid. It was at a bar.
The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition condemned the operation. Executive Director Sherman Luna released the following statement.
"When more than 100 people are violently rounded up in the middle of the night it sends devastating shockwaves through the entire community. Fathers not returning home to their families, roommates left wondering where their friend is, businesses left shuttered and short-staffed as entrepreneurs and workers don't show up Monday morning.
When we say this administration is trying to reshape our nation in their narrow white nationalist vision, this is what it looks like: disappearing our families, neighbors, friends, and co-workers in the night with no regard for the devastation they leave behind."

I appreciate the Beat and @maddioneill.bsky.social's reporting in this piece re: the use of copaganda to justify criminalization and rights violations of children baltimorebeat.com/baltimores-n...
Black teenagers who gather in Fells Point and other affluent waterfront neighborhoods on summer nights have long been a fixation of the city’s conservative media outlets, which have reported on the new checkpoints without raising questions about their impact on residents’ constitutional rights. Sensationalizing crime that happens in predominantly white areas of the city and highlighting offenses committed by young people — regardless of data showing declining youth crime — is part of a well-worn playbook designed to stoke fear and push for harsh punitive responses from city and state officials.
