I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

One of my most galaxy-brained takes is that politicians and political groups should talk more about workers’ share of national income. It's one of the clearest, simplest ways to describe how billionaires and corporate elites captured so much of the economy--and something policy can change.

This is the part many Americans -- including the Bezosites at the Washington Post -- don't understand. Canadians don't see this just as a Trump thing. It's that America elected him twice, and the second time with an even bigger mandate. The problem we're addressing is America, not Trump.

A big part of the problem is that even if we got “the right leadership” the American electorate has demonstrated it will readily install a maniac ganster to replace them if the economy ever stumbles. You can’t really plan long-term alliances with that sort of partner.

All the people who are complaining that the hate for data centers is based on irrational misinformation are ignoring the real basics of what’s going on. 1) Utility bills skyrocketed 2) People freak out at utilities, local governments 3) We get responses that look like this
Capacity market data center costs: PJM operates a periodic capacity market auction under which power plant owners make advance commitments to provide power to meet reliability requirements. The power demands of data centers are driving substantial increases in the need for supply, driving up capacity market prices. According to the independent market monitor for PJM, data center load growth is "the primary reason for recent and expected capacity market conditions" within PJM. And PJM and Maryland customers are already seeing the impacts of projected data centers' electrical demands in their bills. For more information about the capacity market, its impact on Maryland customers and OPC's advocacy, see OPC's FERC/PJM website.

They disinvented the VCR. You might think that the reason we don't have VCRs anymore is because VCRs were supplanted by DVDs, PVRs and streaming, but that's not the case. They had it in for the VCR from the very start, and they never stopped trying to kill it. Eventually, they succeeded. 1/
A 1960s family living room in which a mom, dad and two kids are mesmerized by a cabinet-style TV. The image has been altered. The TV has an early 1990s VCR atop it. The TV screen is displaying a cross-sectioned human head with brains and spine on display. A huge fist has materialized in the room, with bloody spiked knuckle-dusters, smashing into the VCR. The oil painting over the sofa has been replaced with a pulp image of a male head, its cranium removed and replaced by a dome. Inside the dome is a red eight-segment VCR clock, displaying 12:00. The background in the painting is a tangle of cassette tape. The whole image's colors have been boosted, giving it an overexposed look.
