the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

there's a pretty strong case to be made for abolishing fraternities just on a comparative basis with other countries. in the UK, to the best of my knowledge, no examples of the kind of campus gang rape cases that happen with depressing regularity in the US.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.

This is how historian Robert Paxton defined a certain word that begins with F in his 2004 book.
Fascism may be defined as a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.

T-Rex: The best tattoo in the world exists.

T-Rex: And I'VE got it!T-Rex: Unfortunately this tattoo is so good that even merely viewing it causes everyone to instantly find themselves despising all other tattoos (for not meeting its new and glorious standard) and in so doing it ruins all tattoos for everyone else, so I've covered it with your standard lime green flesh-coloured makeup.Utahraptor: You're performing a fine public service.
T-Rex: Happy to!

Utahraptor: But maybe you could show it to me, so I could get the same tattoo too?
T-Rex: Ah, I wish I could, but part of what makes it the best tattoo in the world is it's absolutely unique.T-Rex: However, the SECOND-best tattoo in the world is still available: that's a ruler that's practical for a few months until your skin changes, and then it's useless.
T-Rex: To answer your question: yes, there is an ABYSSAL gulf between first and second place!

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Pleeeeeeeaaaaaaase tell me that all those "you should need a government ID to access the internet" people are rethinking this position now. [We know they aren't. Ed.]
The first two paragraphs of the linked-to story:

"Denmark has suffered a major data breach that has given unauthorised individuals access to names, addresses and personal identification numbers belonging to about 8.8 million people registered in the country’s central population database.

"The breach occurred after unidentified individuals misused a private Danish company’s legitimate access to search the Central Person Register (CPR), the government said in a statement Monday."

Acrobat's AI offered to summarise my hand-written "Colour in a Goblin" sheet Cracking stuff lads, keep up the good work. Worth it
Colour-and-draw outline of a goblin that we bashed together for Questival last weekend. Next to it are some hand-written notes:

"THIS GOBLIN'S NAME IS ____________
AND THEY DREAM OF ___________

Win fabulous prizes!
- Finish the drawing
- Colour it in if you want
- Bring it to the RRD stall
- Win a free one-page roleplaying game!

(We have felt tip pens and that, come say hello)Generative summary of the note which says it discusses the importance of flexible approaches, reference frameworks and adaptability in managing change and fostering growth. Which it doesn't. It's a series of instructions on how to colour in a fucking goblin
