There's scarcely been a day's writing when I've not had cause to recall my favourite ever quote from an author about their own work, from a Paris Review interview with John Banville in 2009.
John Banville, speaking to Belina McKeon for The Paris Review in 2009:

INTERVIEWER

Do you really hate your own novels?

BANVILLE

Yes! I hate them. I mean that. Nobody believes me, but it’s true. They’re an embarrassment and a deep source of shame. They’re better than everybody else’s, of course, but not good enough for me. There is a great deal more pain than pleasure in writing fiction. It’s only now and then, maybe once every three or four days, that I manage to write a sentence in which I hear that wonderful harmonic chime that you get when, say, you flick the edge of a wine glass with a fingernail. That’s what keeps me going. When I read the proofs of a new novel—which is the last time I will read or even glance at it—I approach it with one eye closed, so to speak, thinking, God, what am I going to find here? And I find horrors, horrors that can’t be fixed. Everything in the text now seems hopelessly flat and deadened. Where I imagined a dancing rhythm, I find clumping and stumbling.

Self-Portrait — Nelson Shanks, 1987
Oil painting of a blonde bearded man in a faded denim jacket holding brushes in his hands. He has turned to look back over his shoulder at us, or at himself, with a searching expression — "searching expression" is such a cliché — I hate trying to put words to facial expressions. He might be startled, turning in surprise to find himself behind himself. He might be judgemental, weighing us in his gaze or weighing himself. I guess one thing I'd say is that he looks like he is not as uncertain about whatever he sees as I am.
I hunted a bit, but I couldn't find a higher quality file for this image. :(

All the more annoying because I adore the film, but The Nice Guys is set in the summer of 1977 and has posters of the artwork for Never Mind The Bollocks (not released until August) and Pennie Smith's famous shot of Paul Simenon of The Clash (taken in September 1979).
Still from The Nice Guys (2016). Russell Crowe stands next to a bed on which Margaret Qualley is lying, in a teenager's bedroom. There are music posters on the walls.

Ohhh... so, is this why pre-decimal European money worked the way it did? Decimals don't make sense in a ratio world? (Basically the only book I've read on the history of measurement is Hasok Chang's amazing Inventing Temperature; frantically googling)
A short excerpt from Jim Tolpin and George Walker's By Hand and Eye: "The language of the artisans was all about finding, generating and laying out whole-number ratios with a compass and straightedge. They were not using rulers to work to arithmetic derivations of a numbered measurement. So while using a scale based on one to 10 works fine to resolve numerical formulas, you do often end up with decimal fractions of a whole number. That would require an artisan to lay out to a numbered ruler – not to mention having to deal with decimal places. Another downside in using base-10 is that 10 doesn’t readily break down in whole-number fractions: You are limited to 1/5 and 1/2. A one-to-12 scale, on the other hand, gives you 1/6, 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 – the ratios of which can be easily counted out on one hand (thank you ancient Babylonians) as shown in the drawing below. Note that you use your thumb as the counting cursor."

Some 3,400 years ago, an Egyptian artisan captured a sense of speed and elegance in this beautifully carved handle in the shape of a horse! 🐴 ❤️ New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep III, c. 1390–1352 BC. The Met 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ivory handle of a light whip or fly whisk carved in the shape of a horse. The ivory body of the horse is stained reddish-brown, and the mane and tail are black. The horse is seen in profile facing left. Its legs are outstretched in front and at the back in what scholars refer to as a ‘flying gallop' position, with a gracefully arched back. The eyes are inlaid with garnet, one of which is missing (not seen in my photo). It is displayed on a vertical, thin metal stand in a museum display case. This beautiful object is dated to the New Kingdom period, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep IlI, c. 1390-1352 BC. Dimensions: L: 14.7 cm × H: 5.5 cm × W: 2 cm

Multiple reports a day of men raping women, in all countries, from all backgrounds. Drugged wives, students, being knocked out. Just fucking awful. Is it worse than it’s been? Is there an element of being emboldened by folk like Trump getting re-elected. Act without consequence. Even get rewards.

Mars’s oddest cloud may be even odder than we thought 🤔 Every spring and summer in Mars’s southern hemisphere a spectacular cloud emerges: the Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud, the most visually striking cloud on the Red Planet. 🔭 🧪

There are so many people, so many, that love film and want to dedicate their whole lives to making films, in front of the camera, behind it, in editing suites and casting rooms and makeup trailers. And that these locusts can come in and just devour the industry, take it from us all, is devastating.
