remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

Symbols matter. White House isn't a palace. Kennedy Center is for the general public to enjoy. We don't have a triumphal arch in DC because that's imperial. We don't put the president's face on money because it's monarchical. It's about tearing down everything that says we're a democratic republic.

Tolkien gave up on writing a sequel to the Lord of the Rings because he imagined the youth of Gondor forming 'orc-cults' who would imitate Mordor and found it too depressing; a remarkable feat of imagination when it came to predicting people who still worship the Soviet or Nazi empires today.

Exciting news everybody: so long as you change the name on the tin of your empire, it is suddenly not imperialism for you to violently reconquer the people you used to control, it's just sparkling anti-secessionism. Tankies, man, wow.
A bluesky exchange:
steviebaby: "you think the SFSR was imperialist? in 1917? how so? by retreating from world war 1? or by signing the brest-litovsk treaty?"
Me: ...by setting out to reconquer the whole of the empire possessed by the Tsars. At no point were the Bolsheviks, "oh, that Tsarist imperial possession just doesn't want to be ruled from Moscow anymore, we should let them go."

The plan was always "murder until they submit."

y'know - imperialism.
Me: The Fins, the Estonians, the Latvians, the Lithuanians, the Poles, the Ukrainians, the Uzbeks, the Kazakhs, the Kyrgyz, the Tajiks, the Georgians, the Armenians, the Azerbaijanis and more I am probably forgetting all tried to break away from the empire only to be clawed back.

That's imperialism!
steviebaby: should i list all the confederate states here or do you get the point
