The Princeton Foundations of Contemporary Philosophy series really hasn't done anything about the gender disparity in its author line up yet huh

Heard a rumor on the playground. Too new to be in the encyclopedia, so where else can you go for evidence?

I was surprised how much more I got out of reading the original trolley problem paper than I expected. There’s a lot there that isn’t preserved in the short overviews.

Have a great time in Australia! Definitely try to get over to Melbourne once you're settled. It's a great city.

This might be the wrong website to ask this, but we're discussing Just War Theory in class this week and I cannot reason myself out of the view that it's all post facto rationalisation to benefit leaders doing whatever they want. Am I being too cynical?

Being against using Wikipedia as a credible source at its inception seems like a good attitude, since it needed time to establish that it was a reasonable source as it was significantly different from other resources at the time

Not to take away from your assessment of the APA, but isn’t the claim about bankman-friend’s parents false? It looks like they’re both legal scholars and only one did any ethics work.

It's fun having a hobby that you're okay with doing at the level you do it. I have one of those too. Whenever friends find out about it, they almost all say "why aren't you better at this?" I don't need to be. I'm happy with my silly little hobby as it is.

There was a bloom of stories maybe ten years ago about older professors creating problems for the job market by not retiring, and just checking in now to point out that they’ve since retired and almost none of their jobs continue to exist.

One professor’s AI-assisted output: 200 papers and 14 books this year
An online platform removed 257 papers written or co-written by the University of Chicago’s Nicholas Polson after other academics raised questions.

Looking for takes by TCS (Theoretical Computer Science) senior academics/researchers about AI and their discipline/research values. E.g., essays, detailed blog posts. (Specifically TCS: there is a lot from Maths, but while adjacent there are enough differences in culture it's worth distinguishing)

This is very niche. If you have a PhilPeople profile and you click on web analytics, you get a page showing traffic to your profile. Below that is a list of the locations by IP address, and the list includes a little image of the flag of each country your visitor is based in and you can see the tld.

One other thought is that cardinality isn’t a great metric for complexity. Maybe you could a comparison based on quantifier alternation complexity. The initial facts are all atomic sentences, say, so they contribute no complexity. Then you can just look at the complexity of the laws in prenex form.

Shawn Standefer @standefer.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Maybe the way to do the comparison is by relations among classes of models of the systematization
110
Shawn Standefer @standefer.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Why can’t you compare the systematising laws over a given base of facts? It’s not clear to me why the base facts must be included in a comparison

Asked in an interview, it can be an invitation to say more about the relation between your work and other topics. It can also be hostile and there is no response that will satisfy.
