Quiet thoughts.
Photo of my fluffy white cat Francie lying in the top of a beige carpeted cat tower, just her head is visible with her chin resting over the edge of the bed. The room behind and all around her is dark and she is illuminated in cool, greenish afternoon light from a window out of frame on the right.

Smol. Photo from my collection, no date/info.
Faded color photo of a tiny tuxedo tabby kitten curled up on top of a blue low top sneaker. The pair of sneakers is on a linoleum floor inside. The kitten just looks very small and round and plump and adorable.

Lucille Ball--actress, comedian, producer & film-studio executiver--was born #OTD in 1911. In 1962, she bought out Desi Arnaz's interest in Desilu Productions & became the 1st woman to own & run a major TV studio. Desilu produced many popular TV series including Mission: Impossible & #StarTrek. 🖖
This classic black-and-white studio portrait captures the legendary Lucille Ball (1911–1989), an American actress, comedian, and pioneering studio executive. Best known for her iconic role in I Love Lucy, Ball was the first woman to lead a major television studio, Desilu Productions. In this elegant, close-up composition, Ball looks directly at the camera with a calm and poised expression. Her light-colored hair is styled in elaborate, high-volume rolls that sweep upward from her forehead, typical of the sophisticated 1940s glamour. She wears a shimmering, light-toned jacket with a subtle grid pattern that catches the light. Her ensemble is accented by large, round, sparkling cluster earrings that draw attention to her face. The lighting is soft yet focused, highlighting her perfectly applied makeup—defined brows, dark mascara, and a polished, dark lip color. The background is softly out of focus, featuring a neutral, textured wall with organic, leaf-like shadows that create a sense of depth.

Hello from Northern Spain #eclipse
A total solar eclipse hangs low over a rural Spanish landscape, the dark disc of the Moon surrounded by the Sun’s glowing corona. Hazy evening light washes across rolling fields and distant hills, with scattered trees and a solitary church silhouetted beneath the eclipsed Sun.

I sometimes worry that too many people think being a good critic means being a self-righteous dick about every little thing and I think far too many miss the point that you can't critique anything if you don't know how to love something.

I W H E N T H E L I G H T R E M A I N S I Where the Light Remains, a quiet horizon caught between fading warmth and endless silence. Sometimes even the smallest light is enough to guide us home. — The Asylum Art — #art #conceptualart #modernart #abstractexpressionist #sea #light #cptsd
Where the Light Remains explores the fragile space between solitude and hope. A distant sun dissolves into mist, while its golden reflection stretches across the water like a final thread of warmth. The heavy textures and muted earth tones speak of stillness, longing, and the quiet resilience of continuing forward.

Zachary Quinto, Bruce Greenwood, Zoe Saldaña, Chris Pine, and Karl Urban with J.J. Abrams on the set of STAR TREK (2009)
Zachary Quinto, Bruce Greenwood, Zoe Saldaña, Chris Pine, and Karl Urban review playback with J.J. Abrams on the bridge set.

The copious lens flares seen in STAR TREK were filmed in-camera by literally shining flashlights into the lenses. According to Abrams, this sometimes presented logistical challenges and were in his words, occasionally "overdone": "We had two cameras, so sometimes we had two different spotlight operators. When there was atmosphere in the room, you had to be really careful because you could see the beams. So it was this ridiculous, added level of pain in the ass, but I love… [looking at] the final cut, [the flares] to me, were a fun additional touch that I think, while overdone, in some places, it feels like the future is that bright."

Chris Pine and J.J. Abrams on the set of STAR TREK (2009)
Chris Pine and J.J. Abrams on the set of the Kobayashi Maru simulator, a redress of the USS Kelvin bridge.

According to Co-writer Roberto Orci, STAR TREK was originally envisioned by the writers as a lower budget film, but the scope expanded as the studio's confidence in the project grew: "Paramount was very brave. They were very much behind the idea of taking it into the 21st century and making it a mega-splash, like the things we had done before like TRANSFORMERS and M:I III. They knew that to really get a global audience, they had to put their money where their mouth is. So, much credit to Paramount for supporting a big-budget vision. But, we didn’t write it to be big budget. We could have told that story any number of ways, for less. But J.J.’s appetite and Paramount’s appetite dictated a level that we were happy with. I always preferred less, but I was not going to argue with making it as good-looking as it could be."

J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine on the set of STAR TREK (2009)
J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine filming the Delta Vega snow planet at Paramount Studios.

Abrams discussed the plot contrivance of Kirk happening to encounter Spock Prime on Delta Vega, saying there was dialogue explaining that universe (fractured by Nero's incursion) was pulling the crew of the Enterprise together: "...one of the things that people had issues with was, 'Oh, come on, Kirk is going to run into an ice cave and run into Spock? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard!' Granted, it's unlikely. But, in the scene where they're in the cave, there was a sequence... that was cut from the movie, where Spock speaks to that and talks about how this is the timeline's way of trying to repair itself, and it's as much about fate as anything. It's a funny thing. When we were working on the script, frankly it was one of those moments where I was like, "How in the name of God are we going to figure it out?" One of the genius moves that Alex and Bob did is that they just did it. They made it about inevitability. The movie's about this family that nothing will keep apart. It's about that kind of friendship that will endure anything. So, there was a genius in taking the most unlikely moment, a coincidence that I would never, in a million years, buy and hang a huge lantern on it and say, 'That is fate working.' You just go, 'All right.'"

Ultimately, Abrams said the exposition was unnecessary: "To me, it was one of those moments where I thought we could lose that definition...because, in my mind, it really didn't need to be explained away."

J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine on the set of STAR TREK (2009)
J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine confer on the set of Scotty's Delta Vega military shuttlecraft.

Abrams said the biggest challenge involved in rebooting STAR TREK was balancing the interests of new audiences while also trying to honor the existing fanbase and what had come before: "We knew no matter what we did, that there would be some percentage of STAR TREK fans that would hate it. We just knew that there was no way to make everyone happy and yet it was important that we try and so that was the approach. The other weird balancing act is that it was simultaneously its own thing, but it was also adhering to what has come before. It was a vision of the future that needs to work in a way that was relevant for today, but also was a vision of the future from fifty years ago, so there was a lot of bouncing back and forth. There was a brand new cast and yet it also had a character played by one of the original actors, so it was a strange backwards/forwards original piece that was also trying to adhere to what came before, so there was always this bizarre dance going on between trying to make something that was just purely its own piece and also something that was honoring and… what’s another word for it? Just being true to what had come before and that was, I guess, the biggest challenge of the movie."
