In preprints – is birth driving cortical maturation? @mveronicapravata.bsky.social discusses a preprint by @sroig.bsky.social & co, which raises the possibility that cortical developmental programs may be broadly conserved across species, rather than strictly dependent on the timing of birth.

Paying peer reviewers works. Expanded Fast & Fair experiment @biologyopen.bsky.social: • 5.5 vs 37.7 working days to decision with reviews • ~3 vs ~9 reviewer invitations per manuscript • no reduction in editor-assessed review quality • similar acceptance rates www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Scatter plot showing that Fast & Fair peer review reached first decision with reviews much faster than conventional peer review: mean 5.5 versus 37.7 working days. Most Fast & Fair manuscripts met the 7-working-day target, while conventional manuscripts were slower and more variable, up to 116 working days.

Loving this new preprint -- such a clever way to examine the question of the importance (or not!) of sensory experience in shaping cortical development. I wish we could have cited this in our discussion on altricial/precocial animals last year.

We demonstrate that the prenatal conservation of this programs, supports a prenatal establishment of functional circuits, which in turn are essential to execute sensorimotor behaviors linked to late-postnatal stages in mus.

Sergi Roig Puiggros @sroig.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
We generated a new Acomys high quality genome and using single-nuclei transcriptomics, we demonstrate that despite this longer prenatal maturation, molecular programs are conserved between species, following the same expression dynamic patterns.

This process is not only neuronal, as astrocytes expansion and colonization of the cortex, also happens before birth.

Sergi Roig Puiggros @sroig.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
At birth, acomys cortical neurons' morphology is highly complex and they are electrophysiologically very similar to P15 mus neurons.

Sergi Roig Puiggros @sroig.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
Despite this extended gestation length, we show that the sequence and timing of neuronal corticogenesis are fully conserved. Therefore reflecting an increased prenatal maturation period.

Sergi Roig Puiggros @sroig.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
To do so, we leveraged Acomys Dimidiatus, a precocial rodent species, with an extended gestation length (39 days) compared to Mus musculus and born partially mature.
