COPE Policy 2026
MAKE VANCOUVER SAFE FOR EVERYONE (everyone is underlined)
There is more to keeping people safe than skyrocketing police budgets. In 2022, Ken Sim and ABC ran on a platform of “public safety” using outdated and inflated crime rates. This time around, they are using outdated crime statistics to create a false narrative while pushing a costly & meaningless plebiscite to distract voters from their failures.

HEADLINE: Vancouver police union, mayor's party cite dated crime statistic in lead up to election

Instead of keeping our communities safe, they’ve thrown hundreds of millions into the overinflated police budget while voting down safety measures for pedestrians, for vulnerable people, and for climate safety.

Statement from Emily
Lowan on
LNG Canada Phase 2
Laklaran [LEKWUNGEN] TERRITORY / VICTORIA, B.C. — "I'm deeply disappointed to see LNG Canada Phase 2 move ahead with the Final Investment Decision - and to see both the BC NDP, Conservatives all applaud this move, while committing to further expansion of oil and gas throughout our province.
LNG Canada is an entirely foreign-owned project. It is owned by Shell, one of the most profitable companies in history, several foreign state-owned oil companies, and US private equity. LNG Canada's owners also own the fracking operations in the Peace that feed the project. The profits from LNG development flow directly to shareholders and governments abroad, while the costs stay here. Families in Kitimat and Terrace are already living with the health effects: dirtier air, rising asthma rates, and rogue flares lighting up the sky. And for all the public money and all the risk, Phase 2 will create a maximum of 150 permanent jobs.
These are nation-draining projects, and the BC Greens oppose taxpayer handouts to foreign investors. Every public dollar we pour into them digs us a deeper hole. That money should be building Canadian-owned industries that move our economy up the value chain.wildfire-filled summers, and projects that never pay off. The BC Greens will put that money to work here instead - building out renewable energy, backed by good union jobs that don't disappear the moment a foreign shareholder changes their mind.
Power that's owned by our communities, not leased from a pipeline. Energy that brings our bills down instead of tying them to a roller coaster gas price.
On the eve of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, my heart goes out to all the Indigenous nations that have opposed this project, were never consulted, and have been standing up to protect their lands. Reconciliation cannot be a slogan we wear one day a year while governments push through projects over the objections of the people whose lands they cross. It has to mean respecting the right to say no.
This election, British Columbians can choose a government still betting on the last fifty years - or one building the next fifty. It's time to believe in better."

Oil spills have always been a frequent hazard associated with the development and operation of oil pipelines in Canada.Oil pipeline spills are an endemic characteristic of complex enviro-technical systems built primarily for economic efficiency rather than environmental protection.Though frequent, oil pipeline spills have been a proportionally small fraction of the total oil delivered on Canada’s long-distance pipelines, but, in absolute terms, this has meant the uncontrolled release of many millions of litres of oil into the environment.

All Protocol Observed Welcome to Issue 245 of The Continent. What happens when a liberation movement delays succession for too long? Muhoozi Kainerugaba is more than an Uganda's chief internet provocateur and the president’s son. He's the heir apparent, maybe. bit.ly/245_TC
This is the cover of The Continent (Issue 245, dated 18 July 2026) featuring a satirical illustration of Uganda's General Muhoozi Kainerugaba reimagined as the Joker. The headline reads: "The heir apparent, maybe."

Muhoozi lounges casually in a large presidential-style chair beneath the Ugandan coat of arms. He wears an exaggerated Joker-inspired outfit: a purple suit, bright green shirt, oversized green bow tie, purple gloves and a light green military helmet instead of the Joker's trademark green hair. His face has been painted with a wide, unsettling red grin and heavy eye makeup, giving him the Joker's manic smile while remaining recognisably Muhoozi.

He reclines with one leg draped over the arm of the chair, projecting supreme confidence. In one gloved hand he casually twirls a revolver with a white flag tied to the barrel reading "BANG" in red letters, referencing the Joker's trick weapon. In the other hand he fans a set of playing cards, another Joker motif.A poster with a warm cream background features the words "Reading is resistance." in large, bold black lettering at the top.

Below the text is a colourful illustration of a person lying on their stomach reading a newspaper. Their elbows rest on the pages while their head is propped up in their hands. They wear a pink shirt and a cap, with a pair of shoes on their raised feet behind them.

The reader is sheltered beneath a roof made from the open pages of a giant book. The book is supported by two oversized upright books on either side, creating the shape of a small house or tent. The books are illustrated in soft blues, purples, greens and yellow, giving the image a warm, inviting feel.

At the bottom, the poster invites people to subscribe to The Continent for free by messaging a South African phone number on WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram, or by emailing read@thecontinent.org. The Continent appears in bold black type at the very bottom.
