A modern reconstruction of a battle ready Katlian, leader of the Kiksadi clan and of the Tlingit resistance to the Russians in the Battle of Sitka. In addition to the Tlingit armor and dagger, Katlian wears his famous raven war helmet and he holds a Russian blacksmith's hammer that he acquired when storming the fortress of St. Archangel Michael in 1802. White supremacy tries to create a mythos of Europeans being "conquerors" but in reality throughout history First Nations dragged down European powers and settlers into steady stalemates and it was only through fraud and broken treaties that they were to gain much of their stolen territory.

On this day in 1737, the fraudulent "walk" of the Walking Purchase Treaty between the family of William Penn and the Lenape occurs. In 2006, a US court upheld that fraud, such as the 1737 walk, is a legitimate way to obtain lands from Indigenous people. anticolonialhistory.com/event/111/
In 1735, Swedish painter Gustavus Hesselius, who lived in Philadelphia, painted this portrait of Lenape chief Lapowinsa, showing his facial painting. A signer of the infamous 1735 Walking Treaty, Lapowinsa and other Lenape chiefs would spend the next twenty years trying unsuccessfully to have the treaty voided.
