Dementia caregiving can intensify long-standing family tensions and expectations. ISR researcher @spattersearch.bsky.social examines how changing family structures shape caregiving and why early planning, communication and broader support networks can help families navigate care.
Dementia caregiving can expose hidden family tensions, but early planning can ease the strain. As featured in The Conversation. Quote: “The makeup of families is changing, and that’s shaking up how caregiving can reverberate through family relationships.” Sarah Patterson, ISR Researcher, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan. Portrait of Patterson appears beside the headline, with a row of photos along the bottom showing older adults and family members spending time together and providing support.

In panel two we zoom in a little on young Sarah's face. She continues, "An astounding career! An amazing house! World peace!"
The title for the last two panels is "Adult Me".
In panel three we see adult Sarah, looking down.
In panel four we zoom out and see she is in front of a basil plant. She simply says "I want to grow a basil plant".

if you actually love your loved ones, show that love by making sure that they know what you want, and making it as easy as possible, legally, for them to do that. and this goes for medical care and incapacity, as well. if you want your kids to step in, make sure they have POA. etc.

This week in my grad Soc of Family, we're covering Relationship Formation. First up, a quick data viz by @joannapepin.bsky.social & @philipncohen.com documenting shifts in young people's expectations of marriage & being a spouse. 1/ journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
Figure 1. The figure shows data from the 1976 to 2022 Monitoring the Future Public-Use Cross-Sectional Datasets, a nationally representative annual survey of U.S. high school seniors. (A) Young adults’ assessment of how good a spouse they expect to be, by gender (“very good,” “fairly good,” “good,” “not so good,” or “poor”), by gender. (B) Young adults’ expectation of marriage (“get married,” “not get married,” or “no idea”), also by gender. The bottom panels show the percentage point change over the 10 years from 2012 to 2022 for how good a spouse they will be (C) and their expectation of marriage (D). Over the last 10 years of the survey, the percentage of high school seniors who think they will make very good spouses has dropped, as has the percentage expecting to marry. Data access and replication code are available at https://github.com/jrpepin/MTF_Marriage.
