I’m delighted to share this new publication. Writing it was unexpectedly emotional, amid the hype around AI companies claiming jobs will be replaced at historic scale. My answer is: technology alone does not replace people. Humans replace humans. Automation is a *valuation* problem.

Rather beautifully, Professor Mahmood Mamdani's dedication in "Neither Settler Nor Native" is to his trail-blazing son, @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social. He quotes the revolutionary Chinese writer Lu Xun's famous concluding lines in "Hometown": 「其實地上本沒有路,走的人多了,也便成了路。」 -魯迅,故鄉 #everynightapoem
For Zohran,
You teach us how to engage the world in difficult times. May you inspire many and blaze a trail!
It’s like a path across the land—it’s not there to begin with, but when lots of people go the same way, it comes into being.
—Lu Hsun, “Hometown”

RIP David Lynch. I cannot call myself a connoisseur or even really a fan but, like many, I will be chewing forever on the lessons from Twin Peaks that suggest truly eradicating sexual violence would mean transforming everything about our households, families, towns, nations, genders, and hearts.
