Labor unions won the 40 hour work week by sharing the gains from automation. Let's do that again, for a 32 hour work week.

I think Sam Altman has a point that every technology has tradeoffs. We’ve decided cars are worth having even though they pollute the air and drunk drivers kill thousands every year. The question is who bears those costs and how responsible are companies for preventing harms caused by their products

Unpopular opinion: LLMs are generally deradicalizing people whose beliefs are based on pure propaganda. I've been watching this happen slowly with some people I care about. ChatGPT is one of the reasons they finally accept that the NRA, OAN, and NewsMax are lying to them.

Enterprise software companies had a short-lived run where they competed on usability and product-led growth which seems to be over. Now every SaaS app seems to be converging on the same UX monstrosity, complete with AI features of dubious value.

We didn't know it but 2020-2023 were the last years where we could appreciate art, music, and open-source code. We could trust there was a human behind it.

We live in such an incredibly stupid era
Gavin Newsom: I just signed an executive order permanently declaring Artificial Intelligence "Artificial Intelligence" in California.
You're welcome, America.

WHEREAS California dominates Artificial Intelligence ("Al") innovation. even as no state has taken more aggressive action to strengthen the safety. security, and consumer privacy of Al; and
WHEREAS, while language and choice of terminology can have significance, purporting to change something's name cannot distract a person of normal intelligence from recognizing the impotent and craven failure to take action to address well-documented emerging security and safety risks posed by that thing.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California. in accordance with the authority vested in me by the State Constitution and statutes of the State of California, further informed by common sense, do hereby issue the following Order to become effective immediately:
IT IS HEREBY ORDERED THAT: All agencies and departments subject to my authority shall refer to Artificial Intelligence and Al as "Artificial Intelligence" and
"Al," notwithstanding any rebranded or different terminology used by the federal government, unless inconsistent with the law.
I FURTHER DIRECT that as soon as hereafter possible, this Order be filed in the Office of the Secretary of State and that widespread publicity and notice be given of this Order.
This Order is not intended to, and does not, create any rights or benefits. substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity, against the State of California, its agencies, departments, entities, officers, employees, or any other person.

As bad as things are now economically in the U.S., they are only going to get worse as long as Trump remains president. Between his ego and incompetence, there’s no clear path to rolling back tariffs or ending the conflict with Iran. Plan your life accordingly.

Israeli attacks on Gaza since 2023 killed at least 73,795 people, wounded more than 174,800. More than 20,000 children killed, 44,000 injured. Thousands of children have lost limbs, while roughly 17,000 have been left unaccompanied or orphaned. The US is directly complicit in this atrocity.
