I remain pretty bummed out by the state of decompilations, ports, FPGA cores etc these days. The rise of GenAI has really flooded the whole scene with garbage and kinda poisoned the whole concept. Good piece from @pandamonium.bsky.social on it www.segasaturnshiro.com/2026/09/24/c...

Nice article in English about Human Creative School, with a callout about the games made by students/former students (I am quite sure the line is blended between being a full time Human employee for those zealous students who ended up being hired by them and turning their projects into releases...)
Human Creative School ad is overlaid first page with two photos of students working/playingA nice background of design sketches, three photos of students and one of a game and then a callout about "famous alumni" making S.O.S. / Septentrion and Firemen (..and Dragon's Earth too)

I just dumped this Satellaview 8M pack that I recently purchased. Unfortunately it was just a barebones RPG Tsukuru 2 save. That is the 8M pack lottery!

Starting today, we're piloting Japanese magazines in our digital archive! We've spent the last few months upgrading our library infrastructure to support Japanese-language material, starting with the magazine Neo Geo Freak. Read the full blog post for more info: gamehistory.org/5k-magazines/

I finally made it to the Showa themed izakaya on my island, and they had a big pile of Super Famicom games. I told the waitress that I own at least half of these!

I have written up an article about Dream - Land of Giants, the lost Rare developed title for the SNES. A prototype was leaked earlier this month, though it shows that it was pretty early in development. snescentral.com/article.php?...

Here's the first footage of the cancelled SNES/SFC port of Railroad Tycoon to ever be posted online, captured from my promotional tape made by the would-be Japanese publisher. For a long time, the only evidence of the game's existence was two blurry Nintendo Power screenshots!

It is hard to get excited about new Nintendo games when it seems that a lot of what they put out is just remakes of stuff released in the 90s. It is clear that Nintendo thinks that the only market for big games are people who grew up in the 90s. Maybe they are right?

I have a business trip to Kyoto at the end of this month. I have a weekend off, and so I ponder doing a pilgrimage to the old Nintendo headquarters. But who am I kidding, it is far more likely it will be a pilgrimage to the many sake breweries there, lol.

I did some SNES Central database work, really getting close to finishing the ROM images component. Once that is done, the next thing on my list to add are screenshots. Each screenshot needs to be attached to a ROM image.

In Mega Man 7, a well-timed Noise Crush can destroy Spring Man before the fight begins. The animation of the Mega Man 7 Robot Masters' health meters filling up shows their ACTUAL health at that moment, so a Robot Master getting hit when the meter first appears with zero means instant death for them.

one of my favorite things to learn about Yoshi's Island was that some of the most impressive effects in the game weren't even done with the Super FX, they were just HDMA trickery. like Salvo the Slime is made of numerous stacked lines pulled from a triangular background image

An illustration from ASCII Comics by Yoshida Sensha. It shows a tiny knight fighting a gigantic King Slime from Dragon Quest. The King Slime has a giant red and green striped crown with gold ornaments and has a more human face than its usual face. It looks very unamused. An illustration from ASCII Comics by Yoshida Sensha. It's a drawing of Kirby except with a completely different face. Kirby is carrying a sword in his right hand. His face has tiny eyes and a gigantic mouth with lips and teeth. I recall a time when the number of "Megs" a game had was a big deal. 24 Megs is only 3 MB! It seems quaint with some games being well over 100 GB now a days.
An advertisement for Final Fantasy III (i.e. VI) in a magazine from 1994. It shows the box art, Mog, artwork from several monsters from the game, and a couple of screenshots. The text reads "This is the first 244-Meg RPG for the Super NES and one of the most anticipated games of the year. A sure Hit for the holidays".

I am looking through some old EGMs, and I noted that Mortal Kombat 3 made the cover in February, March, April, May, August, September and October 1995. It was like it was the only game that mattered that year! Considering the era, you have to wonder if there was a sponsorship deal.
The covers of the 7 issues of EGM mentioned in the post, featuring Mortal Kombat 3.
