Here's some Music from the unreleased, and lost, 'Jest' game for the N64. Found today on an old backup CD by the original author/composer, Paul Tonge. He has very kindly allowed me to share his work here, for the first time. This is titled Hell - I believe this was one of the levels in the game.

NES Wizards and Warriors was originally titled 'The Tale'. I took this screengrab from an early build of the game from Paul Proctor's original development disk which I was preserving.

Re-discovered by favourite processor instruction. It's 'eieio' on the PowerPC. A great backronymn?

Happy 35th birthday to NES Wolverine! The game was released in North America in October 1991. Coding by myself and artwork / design by Craig Houston. Additional artwork by Lyndon Brooke. Music by Geoff Follin. Developed by Software Creations in Manchester. Written entirely in 6502 assembly language.

I wonder if anyone out there knows anything about an un-released game titled 'Jest' for the N64. There are 2 videos from a press pack on YouTube, and a few comments on a forum. Developed by Curved Logic around 1997 and it would have been published by Ocean/Infogrames? @frankcifaldi.bsky.social

My haul of LEGO game developer bricks that I was awarded for working on the games. TT Fusion and TT Games staff receive one brick for helping make the game. We were allowed to choose the mini-figure within the acryllic brick from a selection of 4 to 5 characters related to the game. Yes, they stack!

Had a fabulous day with former Software Creations colleague and good friend, Paul Tonge, after a 10 year gap. He's worked on the music and audio for many videogames including SNES Ken Griffey Jr. presents Major League Baseball, The Tick, Spider-Man / Venom: Maximum Carnage ( Genesis ) etc.

Just had a message from good friend, Paul Tonge, who I worked with at Software Creations. We last met 10 years ago so hopefully we can get together in the coming weeks and have a huge catchup. Here we are in Palo Alto, CA in the Rose and Crown enjoying a few drinks - 1994. They even had Boddingtons!

Wow, a 30MB Acorn Winchester Disk drive just sold for £717.40 on ebay! These don't come up very often, but that's crazy money. I hope the HD keeps going for a good while longer. You'd be brave if you trusted this to any postal service!

The ONLY offical unreleased version of Cookie for the BBC Micro - leaked copies did appear. This is Paul Proctor's original dev disk for Cookie. He converted the game in his own time and approached Ultimate to see if they would publish it. They declined as the game was too old at that point.

Unboxing NES Magic Johnson's Fast Break - the first NES game I worked on at Software Creations with Mark Wilson. This box has been sat on a bookshelf since 1989 and has never been played - it's an NTSC version and I can't play it here in the UK on a PAL system due to 'region locking'.

The loft room in this lovely Edwardian house in West Didsbury, Manchester, is where Paul Proctor developed all of his BBC Micro conversions of the Ultimate play the Game titles - Cookie, Sabre Wulf, Knight Lore, Alien 8, Lunar Jetman and Nightshade. Between 1983 and 1985.

SNES music development at Software Creations in 1994. This photo was taken in the 'sound proofed' music room in the dungeon ( basement - rear ) of Park Place in Manchester. Chris JoJo is hard at work, possibly on Ken Griffey Jr. presents Major League Baseball.

I worked on data decompression code for quite a few SNES games that Software Creations developed, Including PLOK! This allowed us to fit lots more levels and graphics into the game that we would have otherwise been able to do.

Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) posted his over-the-top video about NES Silver Surfer back in December 2008. It has been viewed over 7.3 Million times! It is also the reason why so many people will tell you that the game is one of the hardest NES games, even those that have never played it themselves!

41 years ago Mike Cook ( Technical Editor of The Micro User ) made this video at the Manchester Micro User Show at UMIST. It captures the passion of that time for all things relating to the BBC Micro and Acorn. I was at the show and you'll see me, aged 19, having a great time. vimeo.com/23537869

Just heard the very sad news that a former Software Creations friend passed away recently. All of his friends knew him as 'Bone'. He was a friendly, fun, knowledgeable guy who started in QA at Creations back in the early 90s, and was recently working on Star Citizen. RIP @bone6502.bsky.social

Remembering those who lost their lives after the attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001. I recall watching the events of that day unfold in total disbelief. I recently visited the Imperial War Museum North (Manchester) where they had a steel window section from the North tower. Profoundly moving.

My BBC Micro and Acorn Electron shoot 'em up 'Galaforce' is 40 years old this month. I was 19 when I started creating the game with help from former school friends Paul Proctor ( Artwork ) and Martin Galway ( Music /SFX ). I went to Superior Software in early 1986 and they agreed to publish the game

This makes me so happy. We need to treasure and preserve books as sometime in the future very few people will be buying them and they will be lost like other forms of media.

NES Solstice had the working title 'Dark Child'. Whilst going through my old development disks I came across some early source code for a demo of the game. I managed to get it to assemble and here is what I found! Yes it's very glitchy. I had to do a lot of hackery to get this to even run!

Listening to Jean Michel Jarre to take me back to the 80s whilst I do mundane office sorting! I often programmed with his music blaring out in the background back in the day. Subtitles do seem rather pointless for instrumental music...

I ordered this T-shirt a few weeks ago and it arrived today. I can't even remember where I got it from, even after trawling through my emails. One of my typical impulse purchases. I think this design was worn by Commodore staff at an early computer show when the PET was shown for the first time.

So what type of media was used by the first game you can remember playing? Was it a cartridge, cassette tape, floppy disk, optical disk ( CD-ROM, DVD or BluRay ) or other. Also, what was the game and do you still play it today?

We will end up losing everything digital if it continues this way. Books, games, films, music, animation, art, TV will be lost along with all other digital content that is slowly being taken away from us. You pay a license fee to access content under very strict terms that are not in your favour.

Another fun day out with my family. This time we went on a tour around Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium. Not an easy one for me, being a City fan, but everyone else supports United! A very informative tour that I would recommend to any football fan. The Etihad stadium is next!

We went on a short River cruise in Manchester recently - up the Irwell from the Media City area. A pleasent hour on the water giving a great view of the city and its history. The Mark Addy pub was the turning point for the trip. The Addy flooded back in 2013 and the pub has been shut since then.

SabreMan / Wulf artwork for the BBC Micro version of Knight Lore. Found on Paul Proctor's original development disks. I believe some of the Spectrum animation frames were removed to save memory as the BBC Micro only has 32K RAM vs the Spectrum's 48K RAM.

Wow! Two small manuals that shipped with the Acorn ARM Evaluation System 2nd Processor just sold for £253! That's not a full set of manuals either. I was guessing they might hit around £50. BBC BASIC and TWIN ( text editor ) software were both written by Sophie Wilson...just missing her signature!

A couple of photos I took of Jamie Urquhart's presentation at Steve Furber's ( SBF ) Festschrift at Manchester University. I rather enjoyed the story aboout the lost ARM simulation BASIC program that was re-constructed from a print-out using OCR and then manually fixed by Sophie Wilson. RIP Jamie.

Sad to hear that Jamie Urquhart has passed away. He managed the VLSI team at Acorn that created ARM1 and its support ICs and later co-founded ARM. I chatted with him at Steve Furber's Festschrift at Manchester University and he had so many wonderful stories about his time at Acorn and ARM. RIP Jamie
Jamie Urquhart is on the far right.
