Dance like no one is watching. Like no one came to your dance recital. Your dad? He completely forgot. How do you feel? No, don't tell me. Show me.

‘Farage complains that the “left-wing media” is out to smear him, though that description might surprise readers of the 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴, which broke the story, or the 𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩, which has covered it assiduously.’ @piercepenniless.bsky.social on Nigel Farage’s resignation. www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2026/ju...

Terribly disappointed to hear the the New Union in Kendal is closing down. Best pub in the town. Here's hoping Phil continues to bring his passions into a new project.

If by "morning person" you mean I wake up at 4 am staring into the inky blackness imagining horrific outcomes, then yes, I'm a morning person.

Larkin’s father died on 26 March 1948. A week the following Sunday it snowed in Warwick. This beautiful elegy was never printed in the poet’s lifetime and yet, arguably, it is his first great poem.

I marvel at the design of our weapons. So sophisticated
that they can transform any man woman or child into
a terrorist. Writing in their flight between launch and
concussion an entire alternate history of a life.
Just as the cop’s bullet convicts you of a crime. Its
presence in your body evidence enough that it always
belonged there.
A violent transubstantiation.

Favourite books of 2025. Sarah Moss's Signs for Lost Children was utterly superb, so beautifully imagined and written. Clare Keegan's Foster made me blub just as much as the film (the Quiet Girl) did. Special mention for AS Byatt's Frederica Quartet, re-read for the third or fourth time.

Walking from Edale to Marple Bridge I happened upon the Thornsett Brewery. Not much more than a shed with some picnic tables, but the Amarillo went down nicely. Finished at the excellent Northumberland Arms with a pint of Sonoma and a rempah chicken from Nasi Lemak.

Popped into the 18th century yesterday, otherwise known as the Three Stags Head at Wardlow Mires. Characterful. Good set of beers. I had the Eyam Quarantine from up the road (actually brewed in Grindlow). Landlord tried to sell us some lurcher pups. Yes, that is a hare with a shotgun behind me.
