Seriously. If you think 6/10 anti-AI arguments are wrong and the 4/10 are anything like the ones in my thread then you do NOT get to cop out of fixing them bc some of the arguments on the anti-AI side are wrong.

Using AI is almost certainly harmful to us cognitively, emotionally, creatively, and socially. We should not use it. We should not normalize it.

AI has talked kids into suicide, fueled paranoid delusional that led to murder, degraded education quality in both k-12 and higher ed, run roughshod over copyright law, increased spam, fueled spam, fueled fraud, degraded the environment, put people out of work, the list goes on and on.

The mainstream conventional wisdom in both cases is that people who are anti-AI or pro trans marginalized themselves by being too far outside the mainstream. My alternative hypothesis is that both trans activists (particularly mainstream adjacent orgs) and anti-AI people were too easy to ignore.

I'm increasingly frustrated that people who are anti-AI aren't being taken seriously, and taking a page out of my thoughts on why the anti-trans backlash got as far as it did I'm starting to think the anti-AI side isn't extreme enough.

To me, one of the most interesting storylines of the last decade is how so many people projected (and some still do!) normal human qualities on this man, when it's clear he's more like a jellyfish who only responds to a few basic stimuli
By any measure, Arsenio Hall was a Hollywood success: He had starred in popular films, packed houses as a stand-up comic and hosted a hit late-night television show bearing his name.
Donald J. Trump saw it differently by the mid-2000s. In his eyes,
Mr. Hall was nothing.
"Dead as a doornail," was his assessment of Mr. Hall in a previously unreleased interview from two years ago. "Dead as dog meat."
Why such a harsh judgment? Because in Mr. Trump's eyes, Mr.
Hall had suffered the most grievous form of public humiliation: His celebrity had waned. His star had dimmed.
It was, in short, Mr. Trump's worst nightmare.
"Couldn't get on television," Mr. Trump said with disgust. "They wouldn't even take his phone call."

It sucks that Palestinians have such shitty allies. But antisemitism is deeply baked into the world, and anyone wading into activism on the conflict needs to educate themselves to see it where it's hiding.

The Israeli government was determined not to allow Israeli citizens the time to grieve and process the atrocities of the 7th October. Instead, it immediately plunged them into a genocidal campaign against Palestinians, and a never ending war against the entire region.

The 7th Oct was the biggest single-day massacre in the modern history of Palestine/Israel. It was followed by the most lethal campaign in the history of the country. In the last three years, Israel inflicted a 7 Oct on Gaza every three weeks on average (in absolute terms; more in relative terms).

Something that the friends in this position often really struggle is that the fact that their ill/sick/disabled friend isn't a "professional patient" who loves the attention and is being dramatic: Their medical situation and fighting our horrible health care system are eating up their entire life.

Especially in the long covid era, having all your friends slowly fade away because you are having a terrible time and not feeling your best self is systemic. It's both isolating and radicalizing, and sending solidarity to people in this position! Along with suggestions from my personal experience.

There's been a growing refrain of "why should we bother learning X if a machine can do it faster" in recent years. And my answer is the same reason we learn to write our own compilers in computer science education. We will always need to educate ourselves in the how and why and the humanity of tech.

a lot of people are asking if someone can ever redeem themselves after doing a terrible thing and personally i believe its absolutely possible. but the work of redemption didnt start ten years ago. "isnt 10 years enough to redeem himself?" is an irrelevant question because it hasnt been 10 years yet

but afaik we have no proof that hes taken any action in that time to rehabilitate himself or to enact "restorative justice" for his victim and/or SA survivors at large. what we do have is ten years of building an image as a trustworthy feminist man, such as what sebastian has pointed to here.

this is a very thoughtful and nuanced piece. i think this paragraph is especially important to keep in mind. a lot of people are talking about geller as if he has spent the last ten years doing his best to atone for what he did, or asking if ten years of "good work" can outweigh one rape.
Regardless of whether or not you believe that rapists should not have to disclose their histories of sexual violence to their co-workers, I don't think Geller should have agreed to collaborate with me - especially for a video about James Franco - knowing that I've often written about living as a survivor of sexual violence (which I assume he knew because he knew of me and it was the subject of my most popular essay). I feel as though I was a small link in a larger chain of survivors used - deliberately or not - as props in a greater project of image rehabilitation. Every collaboration Geller did with an outspoken victim of sexual assault helped to legitimize his public image, and it seems none of us were given the choice of making an informed decision whether or not to support that project. While it's possible that Geller has deconstructed, his actions don't align with the argument that he's spent the last decade "accounting."
