Embedded Evaluators Can’t Fix Companies That Choose to Be Bad — Stella Biderman
Embedded evaluators can report violations, but they cannot fix AI companies that knowingly disregard basic cybersecurity and safety practices.

There's cardinal sins, ordinal sins, and ortolan sins. No matter which you choose, sin-eating will be controversial.

Interesting research suggesting that lobbying is a) pretty marginal to most British businesses, even big ones, and b) those that get more meetings don't see much obvious financial benefit. Not a surprise to me, but suspect it would be to others. blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandp...

Meetings between businesses and ministers are often treated with suspicion. But the evidence doesn't show any advantage gained as a result.

I recently interviewed a traveller from an antique land. Their experience in arid environments with sizable, defunct monumental sculpture (sans torso) stuck with me. While they didn't get the position, here's three key takeaways they taught me about the fleeting nature of earthly power 👇

The NYC mayoral office is very powerful. One of the most powerful in the nation. It has direct control over a huge budget and the mayor can hire/fire for many department heads. Most mayors split power with a council or city manager. This goes into it: www.bbc.com/news/magazin...

Is the New York mayor the most powerful in the world?
The next mayor of New York will get a huge international profile and a budget of $70bn. So how does the job compare with mayors of other big cities?

Resolving ambiguity in order of operations is easy: simply enumerate all possible parsings of a given expression, compute each value, and then average. E.g., for 9-3-3÷3, ((9−3)−3)÷3 = 1 (9−(3−3))÷3 = 3 (9−3)−(3÷3) = 5 9−(3−(3÷3)) = 7 9−((3−3)÷3) = 9 so 9-3-3÷3 = (1+3+5+7+9)/5 = 5. Voilà! 🧮

I really enjoy EB White's take on New York and New Yorkers.
An excerpt from EB White's Here is New York
There are roughly three New Yorks there is first the New York of the man or woman who was born here who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence is natural and inevitable second there is the New York of the commuter the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night third there is the New York of the person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something of these three trembling cities the greatest is the last the city of final destination the city that is a goal it is this third city that accounts for New York's high-strung disposition it's poetical deportment it's a dedication to the arts and it's incomparable achievements commuters give the city its title restlessness natives give it solidity and continuity but the settlers give it passion and whether it is a farmer arriving from Italy to set up a small grocery store in a slum or a young girl arriving from a small town in Mississippi to escape the indignity of being observed by her neighbors or a boy arriving from the corn belt with a manuscript in his suitcase and a pain in his heart it makes no difference each embraces New York with the intense excitement of first love each absorbs New York with fresh eyes of an adventurer each generates heat and light to dwarf the consolidated Edison company
