This is a big problem because the algorithms are feeding us content we don't want and yet they are hard--or sometimes impossible--to change. We have found that most people want greater control and transparency over what they see on social media: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

This is 100% why people who've been on X for years now get so weirdly bummed out by Bluesky or any other site. It isn't that bsky is a 'bubble', it's that being a shithead in the replies gets you an immediate nuclear-block, rather than immediately rewarded with Skinner-box treats

BLUESKY: We’re launching an account on Bluesky and will begin sharing our stories there. Instagram, X, Facebook, and TikTok are brainrot machines, but we’ve decided that Bluesky is different. As a Bluesky user, you own your data and have greater control over the algorithms that serve you content. Also, the platform is extremely publisher friendly and aims to surface and be a quality partner to high-quality news sources. So far, the discourse there seems to be of a higher caliber. So smash that follow button right here @sf.gazetteer.co.

"Twitter is not real life"—Narendra Modi decodemail.boomlive.in/p/bjp-s-mach...
It was Narendra Modi's first public comment after weeks of silence on the protests convulsing the capital, and he'd chosen to break it in their language. He called the paper leak "not a trivial matter" and promised fast-track courts to prosecute those responsible.

Within hours, the internet had taken it apart. One parody kept Modi's opening line — he'd addressed the protesters as "friends" — and cut to three young women staring into the camera: "No, we are not." Other edits spliced his pauses and hand gestures into meme templates, set to trending audio, dragging up promises they said he'd never kept.

Twenty-four hours later, Modi posted a reel again. Same format, same hour — this time thanking "the youngsters" for watching the first one and sending "insightful suggestions."

That same day, at a Cabinet meeting called to toughen penalties for paper leaks, he turned to his ministers and asked how many of them ran active Instagram accounts. Not enough, apparently — because he then told them, according to people in the room, to stop treating X as the whole internet and start making reels of their own.

Watching the man who built one of the most sophisticated political social media machines in the country — a decade of WhatsApp forwards, X armies, an IT cell trained to move fast — get outpaced on a platform, was one of the stranger subplots of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests.

I glance back at Twitter periodically and a funny thing I've started noticing is people making fun of Bluesky for... being like old twitter. Even though those same people all agree that "old twitter" was massively better. Also the classic "I looked up the accounts I hate, turns out, still hate them!"

Our research team is ramping up for coming midterms. Looks like we'll be busy. If you're interested, here's an interactive graph (thanks to Stephen Prochaska) showing how X influencers re-ran the "rigged election" narrative during/following the CA primaries. faculty.washington.edu/kstarbi/Cumu...
A cumulative line graph titled "2026 CA Primary – 'Rigged Election' Allegations: Cumulative Tweets Graph," showing total tweets on the Y-axis (ranging from 0 to 1,500,000+) and time in UTC on the X-axis (June 2–10, 2026). The data, obtained using Brandwatch Consumer Research, shows a steadily accelerating upward trend in tweets over the period. Points are color-coded by tweet type: dark blue for original tweets, salmon/pink for replies, and gold/yellow for quotes. Larger hollow circles overlaid on the line indicate highly shared posts sized by number of retweets. Several notable clusters of large circles appear around June 3, June 5, June 7, and June 9, suggesting bursts of high-engagement viral posts driving spikes in cumulative tweet volume.

I've worked in Democratic digital comms for a long time and pay attention to campaign metrics across platforms. Increasingly I'm seeing Dems who crosspost on X, Bluesky, and Threads get better engagement on Bluesky even with far fewer followers. Here's @jamestalarico.bsky.social's clip last night:
Social media analytics for different platforms and screenshots of James Talarico speaking on stage in his clip across platforms.

There's a lot of data in the analytics and it shows that Bluesky has the highest engagement rate with the least amount of followers at 19.62%
