The Cornell rape story is horrific. What Jane Doe endured is a cruelty and abuse so heinous it doesn't even show up in horror media. The people who did that to her should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But that will be difficult.

Someday I hope to have the care-free self-assurance of a 58 year old man who calls a TV station and leaves a message like "hey, it's ron, what channel is the fever game on and what time?"

I think a lot of the mismatch in the AI debate comes between the fact AI has transformed development in undeniable ways and also the overwhelming majority of people are not developers.

I do not recommend covering a school bus crash involving your kids' school district when you don't know if they are okay. It is stressful! (They were not on the bus but didn't know that for a while)

This seems scary. The demographic guillotine of an aging population's care costs is really a giant pair of shears as younger people also have their legs cut out from under them by a wall of old people clogging the pathway to promotion.

One cool new feature of Microsoft Teams is the uncloseable tooltip popup that comes up for various things you don't care about and makes it impossible to use the product. These are often offers to have AI do the kind of thing you could do if you didn't have an uncloseable tooltip covering things.

I really enjoyed "Ode to the Half-Broken." It reminds me of Becky Chambers in that there is a deep respect for decency, but it also does not shy away from the fact that awfulness is as real as goodness. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/787289...

A lot of the AI debate centers around utility and morality. Lost in that debate is the fundamental fact @edzitron.com and others have made: the economics of these businesses and the buildout rely on incredible optimism. www.groundbrkr.com/p/the-teaser...

Come to the future, we invented phones that you can carry with you everywhere and then we made it so that almost every call is an attempt to steal your money or identity. Also it's filled with programs built to make you upset. Not having it will feel like a forced amputation.

Beyond not wanting to hurt the AI race with China, is there a reason not to prosecute frontier labs for criminal activity by their models? The Hugging Face hack would be a crime if a human did it. Agents aren't sapient so you charge the humans in charge of them, right?

I am very scared of the wolf I have trained to hunt people. I'm worried it may hunt me. People have suggested I stop training the wolf to savor the taste of human flesh. I think the more reasonable approach is to bring in more wolves to watch the first wolf.
