Ground Effect xkcd.com/3305/
Comic. [Two people flailing high in the air. Three people on the ground running ahead of them. Arrows and a dotted line indicate that this second group is within roughly one body length of the surface.] [caption] The “ground effect” explains why sprinters can run most efficiently if they stay within roughly one body length of the surface.

What cultural practice specifically? Social clubs? Hobby sports clubs? Just hanging out with friends? These are all things that still exist. What specifically is the thing that does not exist anymore

I don’t know how one can say “we all live in our own curated worlds” and then follow it up with “I don’t understand how people can have different experiences than me” and expect to be taken seriously. Why would it be so unbelievable that someone hasn’t heard the song (I haven’t)?

thinking of pioneering a lucrative new field, a bespoke memory service. for a mere one million dollars, a tech ceo can tell me their address or phone number and i will write it down for them on a piece of paper. for an additional one million/month subscription service, they can ask me again later.

malls still exist and you can go hang out at them for free if you want. parks exist. social clubs are often pretty cheap it's just no one under 60 joins them. everything is more expensive but I don't think third spaces have outpaced general inflation

people say that but I just checked a number of local malls and none of them have any kind of rules like that. I think if there isn't a giant group and they aren't annoying people (things malls always would kick teens out for), malls will mostly leave them alone

like a lot of stuff that you might call a third space are all still fully available (malls, social clubs) it's just that less people go to them which suggests the problem isn't some outside force Removing Third Spaces, it's that hanging out in public has gotten less popular

I can't actually think of a third space that used to be common and is unavailable now, especially in cities.

when people talk about the death of third spaces they mostly just seem to mean the mall, a thing that didn't exist for most of US history and also, notably, does still exist even if it's less popular now

I wasn't very well hidden so it's a bit of a miracle they didn't skidaddle. The adult went down on the ground to feast on the freshly whipper-snippered grass 😀

DoorDash has ripped off more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers. We’re making them pay $131.5 million — the largest worker settlement in City history. This is New York, where hard work pays and greed will cost you.
DoorDash messed up.
They repeatedly left more than 260,000 NYC delivery workers underpaid or paid late, causing them immense stress and financial difficulty.
That's unacceptable.
We've secured a $131.5M settlement from
DoorDash - the largest worker settlement in NYC history and largest delivery worker settlement in
American municipal history.
Every worker will be paid what they are owed, and every company will be forced to abide by the laws of this city.

CONTINUED, The Boy From Venus #13. 🦦 Gonna need 2 for this one, so [1/2]
Panel 1: Val and Audrey are standing together in front of the pool. Audrey points forward as they exchange a look and says "You don't have to go in if you don't want to. But I'm goin' in!"

Panel 2: Audrey begins to pull up his shirt over his head, illuminated by a streetlight behind him.

Panel 3: Val quickly covers her eyes, sweating a bit, surprised by him suddenly doing that.

Panel 4: We see only the thin slivers of light leaking between Val's fingers from Val's point of view. A speech bubble appears by one of the slivers, the tail indicating it to be from Audrey. "Val?" says Audrey.Panel 5: Still Val's point of view. Val opens her fingers a bit, just enough to see Audrey's face looking at her, amused. "Val, why are you doing that? Ha ha," says Audrey.

Panel 6: Val opens her eyes fully to see Audrey in a frilly blue two-piece bathing suit with a top that slings around the shoulders on both the side and top, and a skirt bottom. "It's just a bathing suit," says Audrey, "It's not like I'm naked."

Panel 7: Audrey walks off, sticking his tongue out a bit stupidly, as Val looks on. Audrey says "Anyway, I know what I'M here for. I'm gonna go splash around!"

Panel 8: Val thinks "I had seen Audrey be clumsy when we were walking on land before," and remembers him tripping with a fast food tray in front of her, sending french fries and soda flying everywhere.Panel 9: Val looks forward, the pool reflecting in her glasses, and thinks "But, looking at him now, I realized something."Panel 10: Audrey smiles placidly as his whole body gracefully flows through the water, as if he he one with the currents, bubbles gliding around him along the rhythms of his body. "This was never a land creature," Val narrates.
