I just saw a commercial for ChatGPT in which a person says they’re preparing to give a lecture on “the history of sound” and I genuinely have no idea what that means. Is it the history of recorded sound or sound transmission? Or just sound in general? Is your next lecture on the history of light?

Last year my wife’s cousin had a baby shower and in a truly awe-inspiring display of midwestern dadness my father-in-law hand wrote cross-state directions from memory for his wife and daughter. Except the roads had changed since the last time he’d driven that way so they ended up getting lost.

I’ve lived lots of places but always identified as being from Illinois because I lived there first, even though we left when I was 6 and I didn’t come back until I was 38. I went to high school and college in Wisconsin and my parents still live there, so I also often identify as being from there.

This is my favorite Sonny solo. When I was in college I learned it by heart. At my wedding, my cousin’s ex, trying to be a smartass, heckled the band by calling for “St. Thomas!” (instead of Free Bird). I picked up one of the sax players’ horns and played the first few choruses just to shut him up.
