The science part of science is still fun: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... A rare mito disease results from mutations in MSTO1. Patient fibroblasts have short mitochondria due to lower rates of fusion and fewer copies of the mito genome (mtDNA). How is MSTO1 regulating fusion and mtDNA copy #?

New preprint from the lab, led by the ever-talented grad student Tessa Lochetto @tlochetto.bsky.social! We find that loss of our favorite phosphatase Pptc7 decreases lean mass, induces skeletal muscle dysfunction, and causes metabolic derangements in adult mice: doi.org/10.64898/202... /1

Sustained loss of Pptc7 triggers variable skeletal muscle dysfunction and diminished body mass through dysregulation of BNIP3
The mitochondrial phosphatase PPTC7 is required to sustain mammalian metabolism, as its global knockout (KO) triggers hypoketotic hypoglycemia and perinatal lethality in mice. However, the extent to w...

It’s out! Huge thanks to our reviewers and the editors at JCB! This collaboration was so fun and Sophie Hurwitz was a science rock star 🌟This story is about the mitofusin paralogs (Mfn1 and Mfn2) - large GTPases in the dynamin superfamily. Their primary role is to mediate outer membrane fusion.
