Today I'm saddened to hear of the loss of Jools Topp. The Topp Twins have been lifelong icons of community spirit and a better, brighter, more inclusive New Zealand. I wrote this poem a few years ago for an event honoring our queer ancestors, later published with Cordite. Photos via RNZ

every mushroom foraging guidebook: This is Woodland Pot Roast, a tasty little mushroom that adds a delightful flavour to soups and stews. Note that it is often mistaken for Satan’s Fistula, a mushroom that erases the last 9 generations of your family from God’s ledgers.

I have been traveling and today I present to you...the thing I saw in the Frankfurt airport. Is it efficient? Undeniably. Does it probably work better than the normal way? Oh certainly. Produce less of a mess? Probably? But the existence of Condiment Udders gives me a deep, aghast disquiet.
A hotdog and pretzel stand with large hanging bottles of mustard, ketchup, and mayonnaise. The bottoms contain squeeze tubes to dispense the condiments.

God would still love you if you were a worm
Worm theology is the idea in Christian culture that in light of God's holiness and power an appropriate emotion is a humble view of self.[citation needed] The name may be attributed to a line in the Isaac Watts hymn Alas! and Did My Saviour Bleed (Pub 1707)[1] which says "Would he devote that sacred head for such a worm as I?" Furthermore, worm theology can be attributed to a recognition of the ugliness of sin, resulting in contrition.

A THIRD DISTANCE. check it out on Substack open.substack.com/pub/infinite...
A THIRD DISTANCE by Max Lavergne.

A friend in need is a friend indeed - and the
enemy of my enemy is my friend, whether I
need them or not - and I keep them close, with
the rest of my friends, but not as close as I
keep my enemies, who I keep closer still - unless
by some anomaly of the enemy/friend calculus I am forced
to maintain a third distance from them - perhaps
less close, or even closer yet, or so similar to
the closeness I maintain to my friends and my enemies
that I can't tell who is which one, if any, or neither.

And revenge is a dish best served cold - and the best
revenge is success, which is why I am laying the foundations of
a thousand year empire - to silence my enemies, and also why
I'm not telling anyone about it -
not yet - not until its longevity is so assured that all heat
has dispersed from it completely, and I am able
to serve the fact of my triumph on a tray of rock ice
to the surprised recipients of my vengeance -
and also to myself, for when seeking revenge
one must dig two graves, with one grave for yourself,
which is still true when your revenge is success,
and also because I would have to be my own worst
enemy to deliberately thwart the satisfaction of
my eternal dominion - and I don't know how far away
to keep that.

. Love Poem There is no question of choice, but it takes a long time. Love’s vacancies, the eye & cavity, track back to embraces where the spine bends & quietens like smoke in the earth. Your tongue, touching on song, darkens all songs. Your touch is almost a signature. .

First HAD call for 2025 incoming! Certified lover boy @jordanhamel.bsky.social is taking over the reins tomorrow (2/13, 1pm est) for a special Valentine's Day Eve submission call. He's looking for messages in a bottle, DM slides, sad songs for dirty lovers, and more. Details in image/alt text.
Valentine’s Eve HAD Call

Love is a dog from hell (or something), and just as St Valentine prepares his feast, it's time for YOU (yes, you) to prepare for a HAD submission call. To celebrate the day of hopeless romantics, gas station roses, waxy chocolate, tasteful vibrators, and ill-advised DM sliding, I, certified lover boy, Jordan Hamel, am handing out skulls. Gimme passion, yearning, sex, heartbreak, friendships, situationships, one-night stands, happy marriages, unhappy marriages, divorces, and everything in between. Will you make HAD the happiest lit journal in all the world? Will I choo-choo-choose you? There’s one way to find out. Send me your best stuff and make your Valentines/Palentines/Galentines/Panama Canalentines one to remember.

Max word count: 600. One piece per submission unless it's poems or micros then two is fine. Send three and I’ll break your heart.

Subs (and doms) capped at 150.

This is what revisionist history looks like, in real time. And this also is why it might appear that archaeologists and historians have to dig deep to discover the existence of powerful women and marginalized groups -- because their legacies are so often erased.

POEM TO BE READ IN A BACKLESS HALTERNECK DRESS WITH A LINGERING ODOR OF BURNT HAIR

Rebecca Hawkes

Idiot!!!!! That is not your wife (the moon) it’s a plastic bag
stuck in a tree. It’s a biblically accurate pickup truck
overtaking at impossible speed. Gun to your head

how many kinds of cloud could you name right now?
A hawk banqueting on roadkill flares its wings
over the possum carcass, not meaning to flee

but to defend its catch from the oncoming headlights.
It’s the third time at this bar tonight I’ve held my hair
against the candle at our table til it catches light. As I blow

dark that sizzling wisp, the flame goes with it. Dumb ghosts
drifting mutely from the wick. I keep saying I don’t even need
a face. Let the hard robot of your body hate what it hates.

"Immortality" sounds lousy to me. What doesn’t kill you
presumably makes you wish it would. Today to be healthy I ate
a purple wildberry fresh from the vine, assuming it would be a grape.

It wasn’t that. I spat for my life. Bitter biter better go down
swallowing. Gargle all the moonshine. Somebody is always
trying to lead me to water. I’m just here for the free drinks.

Volume 15.1, winter 25 Rebecca Hawkes

“I think ‘desire’ is the wrong word and ‘love’ too plain, ‘devotion’ too sacred. My whole life, I think, I will use for describing you.” —Emily Jungmin Yoon “Find Me As The Creature I Am”
Evolution
I look for uncomplicated peace in ocean and sand, afraid of the kind of candor you draw from me, my cowardly deep-sea regime.
With easy honesty I make utterances ugly and necessary to my being, a kind of nakedness I never attempted in the privacy of myself.
Looking at your back darkened by the sun faithfully pouring into the water in front of us,
I think desire is the wrong word and love too plain, devotion too sacred.
My whole life, I think, I will use for describing you.
What do I know outside of words, which despite their history and combinations, are too few and short for this life.
I don't know if I want heaven, but I know I want to be
where you go-
in sand, water, every possible animal form.
