Stephanie Choi 💙 Absolutely love this poem in the most recent issue of @shopoetryjournal.bsky.social!
STEPHANIE CHOI
Vulnerable
Not one of those words which once learned, I couldn't stop saying, like ubiquitous or introspection-instead one that people can't stop saying to me about what I do, what I teach. It's just so...my friend says after a reading, another friend's dad, and another's mom, say it's so beautiful your generation can be...the Dean of my college tells me he read my book and the poems have such a vulnerable power. My boyfriend glances over the student poem I'm reading and says that's the kind of thing I'd write in my notes app and never show anyone, or delete immediately. From the latin —vulnus: wound. I must admit an apt adjective, albeit unoriginal. The wound is the place where light enters you-Rumi writes, and I promised myself I'd never use that in a poem. I want my students to locate the wound with the precision of a surgeon, transform it with the vision of a mountain lion. Stakes. Risks. Everyday I profess the same thing. They write about alcoholic parents, suicide, heartbreak. I often cry when I read their work, alone at home in my pajamas. But I feel shy about telling them this-how much their poems, even the bad ones, inhabit me, continue to sting like scraped knees. I think about them more than I want to, like now at pilates, in a low lounge, as our teacher whose second language is English says if you feel so vulnerable, you can do this... and sets her knee on the ground—a reminder—it's okay, if only for a moment, to let the wound rest.
