An announcement from the society of microwrites authors
We've signed the
Charter to tell AI to fuck off. There is no ethical use of Generative AI
Especially in the creative industries; the training model is based on the theft of our work and must be resisted as a matter of principle. This is before we even consider the environmental and social impacts. Do not comply with the AI industry's mockery of ethics
They have no authority over creative work and any guidance will be contrary to our best interests. Human-created content only
That's the Microwrites code of ethics. Anyone can write, you don't need the plagiarism machine.

Want to know who killed the British high street? Look to the gangsters of American private equity. They’ve plundered British retail companies and asset stripped our country. Right now they’re ready to offload Morrisons, PizzaExpress, Waterstones and even Poundland In @heraldscotland.bsky.social

The high street is dying: blame the Goodfellas of private equity, says Neil Mackay
Private Equity firms are treating British brands like the gangsters in the movie Goodfellas. We need to fix the system or just sink deeper into irrelevance, our Writer at Large argues

Then we might have a chance of policy-making that reflects the public interest, of the dog wagging the tail, of discussion and argument leading to better outcomes, rather than being used as a distraction from the real nature of power. Thank you.

We can spend our lives debating the justifications (I more or less have); but we are wasting our time. What we need is a massive clampdown on the influence of money over politics, including lobbying transparency, campaign finance reform, an end to the revolving door between politics and lobbying.

That’s because the decision has already been made. The issue being debated is merely the post-hoc justification. Where decisions happen and where debate happens are different places. The idea that debate leads to policy outcomes is a fiction designed to create an impression of democratic consent.

Then the government must find a find of selling this policy, which might be very harmful. It will argue that it’s essential for “growth”, “jobs”, “international standing” etc. Opponents will then argue these claims, engaging in the great democratic tradition of “debate”. But debate is irrelevant.

Ten years of relentlessly hateful, comically elitist anti-democratic politics across the white people world, helpfully summarised. The wrong people are talking, the wrong people are deciding and it’s harming the careers of important people who actually matter. Smithers! Release the hounds
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.

Another way to look at this is that the Government tried to placate white nationalists by stopping asylum seekers working, then by housing them in "Centres", then by housing them in old army bases, and at no point has any of it made the white nationalists happy.
