Repealing Thatcher's ban on public ownership of water companies is only meaningful if Andy Burnham brings water into public ownership Over 9 in 10 of us want our water in public ownership. Let's do it, starting with Thames Water
Screenshot of Independent article that includes a quote from Cat Hobbs that says, "Cat Hobbs, director of public ownership campaign We Own It, repeated calls for Thames Water to be nationalised urgently. She said: “Repealing the ban on public ownership of water companies is a welcome step in the right direction, but it is far from meeting the scale of the crisis. “Thames Water should have been in special administration yesterday. “It is in £20 billion of debt and teetering on the brink of financial collapse. “The only option to keep it privatised is to hand it over to a group of US hedge funds. “How can this Government be serious about their promise to reverse Thatcher’s legacy of privatisation, if they are not urgently bringing it into public hands?”"

We're repeatedly told that asylum seekers pose a threat to the good people of our country... Reading about the threatening and violent treatment of elderly and open minded locals in Crowborough I get the impression that the real threat comes from closer to home. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
On Facebook and other platforms, people
who are known to support the asylum
seekers have been threatened with acid
attacks, petrol bombs and rape. The dossier.
which has been seen by the Guardian, also
claims that several local businesses have
been threatened by far-right agitators, along
with a church where some asylum seekers
worship. One man was punched in the throat
after he held up a "Love Thy Neighbour"
sign, while an elderly couple were falsely
accused of supporting sex offenders. In yet
another case, a 92-year-old church volunteer
was reportedly woken at 3am for two nights
in a row by a man standing outside her
home, shining a torch through her window
and shouting abuse

Text from a Times story on the Fairford incident:

The vans contained barrels and were marked with a fake logo and phone number so they gave the impression, wrongly, of being owned by a legitimate fuel transit company. It sparked speculation about whether the men were fuel thieves.

Liar. Small boat crossings peaked under Johnson in 2022 reaching 46,000 in 2022. In current year they are 18,565 and falling. Also prior to Boris Johnson's Brexit there were none.
It's a disaster, and it can all be traced to
Labour ideology. Burnham has no mandate

Mind-blowing story in Private Eye about how the Telegraph's chief reporter reached out to James Orr (or meant to) after the Channel 4 donation revelations

...within hours of journalists on either the *Guardian* or *Sunday Times* contacting Reform for comment on the same stories ahead of them publishing their own investigations. Reform deputy leader Richard Tice and his fiancée, supposed journalist Isabel Oakeshott, even crowed online about their spoiler tactics.

Not that the *Telegraph* doesn't do its own leg work when reporting on Reform. After James Orr, the party's head of policy, had to resign after a sting by *Channel 4 News* (see "*Right Orr Wrong*, p14"), *Telegraph* chief reporter Rob Mendick texted Orr: "I was hoping to talk to you entirely on background," he schmoozed. "You must be feeling very bruised and I totally Appreciate [sic] the sensitivities. I suspect you deserve better and I wanted to see how I can put the record straight in some way." Alas, instead of the Reformer and Cambridge theologian, Mendick messaged someone else, who shared it with the *Eye*!

As I said early on about Keir Starmer: a British politician’s job is not to represent your interests to e.g. the private water company. His job is to come *to you*, look suitably biscuit-arsed, and then explain that sadly nothing can be done. And usually retire to a plush private sector gig.
Watson won't be alone. He will join more than 30 former UK officials at a company that Peter Mandelson's former lobbying firm, Global Counsel, counted as a client. Mandelson accompanied Keir Starmer to Palantir's Washington office in 2025, while still retaining a stake in Global Counsel. The MoD has since signed a major partnership with Palantir. And none of this will have broken a single law. The rules on jobs for former ministers last only two years and have no legal force. Therein lies the problem.
Whether it's Tony Blair and his relationship with Oracle, Mandelson and Global Counsel or Nick Clegg and his time at Meta, the section of the political class meant to oppose vested interests and promote public service appears to have switched sides.

The research found 72% of all £1m-plus donations from individuals since records began in 2001 had come since 2019. Sadly, none of this can be described as an aberration. Rather, it's how the system increasingly works. Now politicians' proximity to wealth and the "elites" who own it has fostered a growing public mistrust. One need only listen to Danny Dyer at a rally last week, calling for public ownership of water, to get a feel for that sentiment. These examples are all symptoms of the growing proximity between political power and the wealth it is supposed to hold to account.

Clive is of course correct, and the key thing here is not that Watson has succumbed to temptation: he was a bullshit artist and a crook ten years ago too. This is just what the system looks like when there is no longer any need to pretend these people work for you, not their future employers.

Tom Watson’s move to Palantir is the latest sign of how far the rot has spread in UK politics | Clive Lewis
